I'm looking for a replacement for my Optoma H30 projector. The projector has been a workhorse for me over the last 3 years. I have nothing but good things to say about this unit.

My bulb has 2000+ hours on it, so I know I'm due for a replacement. I was wondering if I should upgrade to 1080p now, or give it another year. I was looking at the Optoma HD81 but had some serious concerns after reading problems about limited mounting options.

Should I upgrade now, or buy another bulb for my current projector?

I wouldn't suggest an HD81 for 3000 you can get an Epson or Sanyo LCD model and a screen. If you look on ebay you don't see very many Epsons sold, Sanyo's, and Panasonics are always sold. So I would go with Epson. If people are selling a PJ there's a reason for it. JMO

Oh and there is no such thing as a 1080p PJ going for under 1000. You will need 2000 at least.

Thanks for the feedback, I meant to put $1,500 in my post. Now that I re-read it I can kick myself for it.

Sounds like I may need to just upgrade my bulb and wait a bit.

$1,500 is still to much to ask for 1080p. The H30 is a 480p model, so what you paid 3 years ago is where the 720p models are now. I mean, I think about 3 years ago it was $10,000 for the typical 1080p model.

Now, the decent 1080p models fall between $2,000 and $3,000, though deals can crop up from time to time. BenQ had a couple of VERY good deals on refurb models they sold right on their website. None left anymore.

You now get a fair number of 720p models right around $1,000 and the good, but not great, Sanyo can be had around $2,000 or less quite often.

I think that you have about 3 more years to wait before we hit the point you are looking for.

That's a 1080p for 1500. Just know that it has organic panels. For about 500 more you can have inorganics. Sometimes it goes on sale at best buy and they do have financing if you have the credit.

$1,543.25 ain't bad for a decent projector. Playback magazine this month has an article about $3k 1080P projectors. Of course, that's twice the OP's budget, but it is definitely something worth checking out.

They were going for 1200 at best buy a month ago. But once you included tax and shipping it came to 1500 lol. That's why I didn't jump.
