Why Circuit City is going out business..

So, I was at CC looking for some deals (there are none btw.. they cranked all their prices up to full MSRP, then take 20% off...whoopee)

So the salesman(boy) is helping a customer look at AVRs. I kid you not, this is the conversation verbatim:

Cust: "Ummm..Denon.. never heard of that! Are they any good?"
Salesboy: "Oh, uhh, yeah..it's okay, I guess. It is kinda a Circuit City brand."
Cust: "Circuit City makes these?"
Sale: "Dunno if the make them, but yeah, we are the only ones who sell it.. kinda a budget. No where as good as Sony of Pioneer."
Cust: "Ah! So you are saying they are not very good?"
Sale: "Not really...this Sony one over here is really good...."

At which point I walked away...holding my tongue...
Wow...

I used to think that Frys had some of the least helpful staff, but I have to say that once CC layed all their good people off and hired morons off the street, they took the top spot and that is why I completely stopped going there. I wouldn't have held my toungue, but then I wouldn't have been in CC either :)

You know what also irritated a lot of people... Having a warehouse style pickup. Service Merchandise switched to that, where you pick out what you want, pay for it, then have to go wait in line at another part of the store to get it. I remember one of exec at SM saying taht was one of the biggest single mistakes they made.

CC switched to the same thing and I hated it. In fact, I found myself going to BB more often because of it. I just associated a hassle factor with it.

For CC, it was a combination of a lot of things and a disinterest, unwillingness, or inability to adapt as retail evolved.

It still goes on everywhere, my best friends father was talked into buying a brand new TV, because the saleman told him, his three year old 1080i DLP TV (with HDMI mind you) couldn't properly display Bluray. I heard that and wanted to go to the store and rip the salesman a new A-hole for that one. Luckily my friends father is extremly wealthy and wouldnt care one way or the other, but if it had been my folks they did this to. Somebody's head would be on a platter.

Expecting Circuit City to have knowledgeable people is unfair.

I doubt any store of that caliber could pay the right salary for an expert. I always tell people to take a knowledgeable friend with them to buy electronics. I would gladly go with anyone that needed help. I don't know why someone would hold their tongue about Denon. I would have taken the opportunity to explain to him that Denon is one of the top AVR brands and actually makes better products than Sony in the audio area. I couldn't leave a guy in ignorance like that. Of course I would also steer people away from Denon as a salesperson because the manuals suck. Most people need a good manual to setup their system.

Me too, I used to love browsing their catalog and going to the store to get stuff.
I miss catalogs! If you're younger than me - 39, you may not remember this sort of thing, but remember when you were a kid and around Christmas you got the phonebook size Sears, JC Penny, and Montgomery Ward catalogs?

They had these huge toy sections, stereo equipment, stuff for cars, all of that. I used to turn page by page. Of course as I got older I spend a little more time on the women's undie section, but I always did find my way back to the toys. I was always espcially anamored with the slot car tracks. I remember they always featured one really huge track called the "something 5000!"

Good times!

I posted this earlier when my local Circus City was among the first to close but I have to reiterate my amazement at the stupidity of some of their management and salesclowns --

There was a 61" Samsung LED DLP set on the floor with the blue LED clearly out - the image was all red and green. On the way out I just had to ask a salesclown how they expected to sell that TV. His reply was "Oh - that one's broken - the ones in the box are fine." And that is an exact quote. I just walked on out the door shaking my head... That's like going to a car dealership and them having a wrecked car on display and saying "oh - well the others in the back aren't wrecked" ...

Oh, yeah!!! I remember the JC Penny catalogs - those were awesome! Back when Christmas was a huge deal, and all those toys. Oh...the toys. I can still kind of remember the smell of the catalogs, too.

Yep. :D

I walked into Circuit City tonight and picked up a Denon AVR-589 for $239 + tax (20% off 300). They had 3 of them NIB in stock. The equivalent model across the street at BB Magnolia was 349.99.

So there are some deals to be had, just have to know where to look :)

And as a side note, Audyssey Multeq did a nice job of taming the acoustic problems in my small 2ch room. Not using the center/rear channels at all, just the fronts and sub. I wish my Onkyo 805 (with the superior Multeq XT) also had the "flat" curve option like Denon. I was a bit fearful that regular Multeq would suck compared to XT, but it doesn't seem that way.

Well, of course it was cheaper at CC - it's their store brand. :D

[BTW, thanks for that info. It's the first post that I've read that someone got a good deal there - although I haven't read all the posts.]

Apparently people are drinking the kool-aid... my dad called me last week to ask about buying a Blu-ray player from them... I told him to hold off. This is a man who doesn't care much for the difference between standard definition and high-definition cable (his SD cable is good, but not HD resolution).

Why isn't your dad shopping from the Audioholics store? I'm sure you can hook him up with a coupon code :p

Expecting Circuit City to have knowledgeable people is unfair.

I doubt any store of that caliber could pay the right salary for an expert. [emphasis added] I always tell people to take a knowledgeable friend with them to buy electronics. I would gladly go with anyone that needed help. I don't know why someone would hold their tongue about Denon. I would have taken the opportunity to explain to him that Denon is one of the top AVR brands and actually makes better products than Sony in the audio area. It is interesting that people complain about the lack of knowledge of the staff of a place that is cheap, and complain about the high prices at places with knowledge. If you want knowledgeable salespeople, you should expect to pay for it. If you are going to a budget store, you should not expect knowledgeable people.

Now, what gets me, is going to an expensive store, and the "knowledgeable" people get things wrong, particularly in the direction of trying to sell you overpriced wires and other BS nonsense. I don't mind paying a bit more for useful advice, but I don't like them trying to cheat me out of extra money for worthless nonsense. It is because of stuff like that that I tend to avoid the boutique stores.

As for CC, I stopped buying from them when they screwed their employees years ago by firing them, only to rehire some of them later at reduced pay. Any company that does crap like that deserves to go out of business. And, of course, when they are going for the cheapest labor possible, you should especially expect that they are not going to have too many of them who know much about what they are selling. Anyone who expects knowledgeable salespeople at CC obviously doesn't know much about the store they are visiting.

I still have my slot car tracks :) In the garage, next to the Starwars and GI Joe toys, boxed up and unseen for many moons.

The salespeople and managers are all being fired; what do they care about Circuit City now? They have nearly zero incentive to do what would normally be a good idea for making sales. If they are smart, they are already looking for other jobs, and will leave as soon as they find a good one.
