I'm in a pickle guys (and gals).

The house I moved into is pre-wired for 5.1 speakers and the cabinet for the receiver/DVD player/cable box are half way across the room (so I cannot put the receiver near the TV to use the HDMI cable

the only wires running from the cabinet to the TV is a set of component cables

Currently I'm connecting my cable box/PS3/DVD-player using component cables on the input of a Denon DVR-688 and the monitor out is also component and is connected to the TV, all the audio is either going thru optical (toslink) or digital coax cables

My cable box and PS3 has HDMI out, I like to use HDMI to pass the video signal into the receiver and output it thru the component monitor out.

Is the Denon 688 able to do this? I've tried just hooking up the HDMI and I cannot get a video signal to go to the TV. Is the HDMI-in only wired to go to the HDMI-out and the video signal is not duplicated to go to the component monitor output?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

No, it can't convert the digital signal from HDMI into an analog signal to output as component video. I don't know of any receiver that can do that, yet. Several can convert from analog video to digital, though (so, convert component video or other into HDMI).

EDIT: Check out page 8 of the owner's manual. It has a nice diagram of how video signals can be converted.

Thanks for the reply Adam. I'm just trying to get around the fact that when I use component cables from my PS3 I cannot output 1080p (just 1080i). And I know that HDMI is the only way the PS3 will display 1080p.

Here is a product from ebay which I'm looking to try (it is a hdmi to compnent cable, I tried posting the link but I don't have enough post count yet :) so just do a search on ebay if you want to see the picture I'm talking about). I hope is that it will trick the PS3 to output 1080p since there is something connected to the HDMI output. But then I send the signal to the component input of my receiver. What do you think?

Is the cable that you are looking at on eBay like this Sony cable?

A review on Newegg says that it does 1080p just fine, but the description that I saw for the cable says that it supports 720p/1080i (and doesn't mention 1080p).

Those cables are a hoax. HDMI is all digital, and a two way communication at that, for copyright protection. A component connection is analog. So you can't use a cable to make the connection, you would need digital to analog conversion. Converting HDMI to Hi def analog is now an illegal conversion, for reasons of copyright protection.

The Sony cables are not a hoax.
Does the play station 3 have the ability to be directed to produce an analog signal at the HDMI port? If so I'm not aware of any other unit that does. All I know is that it is impossible to send a digital signal to analog ports which component inputs are. HDMI is by definition digital. Home digital media interface.

That unit could not work on any unit I have through my hands, so there must be something unique about the play station.

You make good points, TLS. I don't know the answer to your question about analog output from the PS3 HDMI port, but from the reviews - those Sony cables do exactly what they claim to do.

I understand now. The Sony cable isn't HDMI. I looked up the PS3 connections (video link here), and there is a separate A/V output jack that is a rectangular connection.

So - those Sony cables aren't HDMI-to-analog. Whew. The world makes sense to me again. :)

EDIT: On the other side of this, though, the reviews did say that the Sony aftermarket A/V cable performs quite a bit better than the standard cable that comes with the PS3. So, it might give acceptable performance.

That makes sense to me to now. So that cable is not HDMI to component, but a proprietary Sony connection to Component. Mystery solved.
