My parents won these at our 2008 SOTU Dinner Auction event last October.

I was going to build the kit for them but they later decided to go with all in-wall speakers.

Thus I will sell the kit which is still brand new for $125 + shipping to the first person that PM's me.

This is a very nice speaker kit using high quality drivers and crossover parts (all air core inductors, ceramic resistors and poly caps).

Specs:
Impedance: 8 ohms
Frequency response: 43Hz - 18kHz
Sensitivity: 85 dB 2.83V/1m
Power handling: 100 watts max
Dimensions: 14-1/4" x 8-5/8" x 11”
Two hour assembly
Kit includes everything needed to build one pair of speakers
List: $239.99

I'm going to need a soldering iron. I could use a friends pistol grip type but am pretty sure that I would be best served by a lower heat model. It's been ~25 years since I took that class in high school and that info and those skills are long gone. Some direction would go a long way here. :)

I took my soldering class in junior high....but that got me a job as a test tech working on some 3M allergy testing machines :) I have two irons and was able to solder just fine after about 18yrs, so I am sure you will remember it easily also. These are on sale this month at PE, but that is still a lower price. I have wanted to build a pair of these for a while and even though about picking up this pair, but I don't have a real use for them right now. I have 3 other GR A/V-1s to build still :D

What's on sale? I saw that PE had many different models.

I Googled but couldn't figure out what those were.

I didn't need these BR-1's either but just couldn't resist the deal.;)
I just wanted a pair of speakers to play with. :)

The BR-1s are on sale for like $139.

Click the GR Research link in my sig to see the kits and My HT for my speakers.

The BR-1s are on sale for $139 at PE, which is $10 higher than their previous price for them. So that price is still even lower.

Click the GR Research link in my sig to see the kits and My HT for my speakers. The GR kits don't include enclosures, so the total cost is much higher unless you have wood working capabilities. I bought some pre-built enclosures really cheap from a friend so all I need to do now is get the kits and assemble them.

uh-oh ... ... I thought you meant soldering irons were on sale and forgot to post the links.

I now see that Gene mentioned the 'list' price in his OP. I thought I was saving $115. Turns out that this link would have been more helpful.

Suddenly I'm not as excited about the deal as I was 5 minutes ago but still need a recommendation for a decent soldering iron and maybe a link to some soldering instructions if anybody is aware of some good ones on line.

TIA

Hey, Alex. Yeah, I saw that they were on sale when I saw Gene's post. However, you can still be excited - you are helping to fund this site (in a way). Seriously - thanks for that.

The price for the kit has steadily gone up, so I highly doubt that they will ever hit a price like what Gene is offering here again, and that is the current sale price that is still more.

I'd say get a decent Weller from PE; there were some on sale this month as well. There's a 35W and a 25W for $41 and $51.

Don't mind me. I understand that it is a good deal. Not a 50% off deal but a deal none the less. To be honest I would have liked them pre-assembled and free. ;) That really would have made my toes curl. :D

Anyways, in case anybody is watching this thread for some soldering info this is what I came up with:

Alex;

If I had the time, I would have built them for you but I am so far behind in my reviews. The part quality in this kit is simply amazing for this price!

I'll build the crossovers if you send me the parts and instructions.

Hey guys,

I appreciate the offer and the sentiment. Incredibly enough I would be embarrassed to accept such offers. That level of laziness is beneath me. I'm competent enough, I have the time and the desire to make this fly. It will also be a fantastic primer to making solder type RCA interconnects. I'm looking forward to this. :)
