I'm not there (heck, I'm not even to vegetarian), yet, but I might get there.
I'm not against the consumption of other life in order to sustain my own, as that is the way of the world around me. However, the lack of respect for life (and downright cruelty) that exists in the mass production of meat upsets me and makes me sad. While my individual act of abstaining from meat won't stop the industrial machine, I can play a small role. In the meantime, I buy products that I believe are from a more respectful treatment of livestock - eggs and dairy products from free range chickens and cows, organic chicken, and such things. I know that companies could be lying about how they treat the animals, but for now, I believe them. I'm more than willing to pay a few more dollars if it means that chickens can breathe open air and see the sun, as opposed to the horrid chicken houses that have no windows and in which chickens are born and die without ever seeing the outside world. The same goes for cows that can walk the fields instead of being held captive in front of feeding troughs.
