I'm looking to get a new display later this year. Having read some of the recents comments on this forum and reading that article "Why is plasma BETTER?". The article clearly referenced where the two differ, yet the masses buy LCD. Unless you're a true videophile or tweak freak, isn't LCD the simpler of the two techologies?

Regards, Bill :)

The masses buy LCD because of all of the misinformation that is thrown around regarding plasma displays and also because of the heavy marketing done by the LCD manufacturers. Another factor is that in the smaller screen sizes (which are very popular) LCD is the only choice.

LCD is not more simple than plasma. In fact, an LCD panel has a more complex manufacturing process. As far as the consumer is concerned they are two different types of flat panel TV with different pros and cons. As far as the average joe is concerned, he wants the cheapest one.

I wouldn't buy anything but a plasma. They offer the best picture quality for the money, period. You can get a 1080p Panasonic 42" plasma for under $900. I garuntee no LCD in that price range even comes close!

I use my plasma as an Xbox360 monitor as well as a PC monitor and it has performed absolutely flawlessly. I'm glad to see plasma sets make a comeback in the market.

I used to lean toward LCDs til I bought my plasma and now I wouldn't have an LCD if I was paid to take it (well maybe I would and put it in my bedroom). All's I got to say is --- Blacks? - hell yes! ... Motion blur? - what's that?

I have been in the market for a tv for awhile but funds have kept me from taking the plunge. While looking for a tv CC, BB, Sears, Radio Shack (hey they're really close to home) Target & WalMart etc.... have all told me that plasma is going away so I shouldn't buy an obsolete technology. Can you say MISINFORNMATION? I used to argue with the sales people but having been in sales before I know what's going on, can you say spiff?

I won't buy LCD due to motion blur which I see on every LCD display I have seen & I do watch a lot of football.

Anyway I drool at the thought of a Panny PLasma at least 50" the 58" would be perfect but my son has just gotten braces & my after insurance part of the cost equals a decent 50" Panny 1080p.

Stupid salesdrones... they will be obsolete before plasmas will. For under $1K you can pick up a Panny 50PX80U and it's a steal - but if you want one you better act quick as the new models are out and supply of the older but still SUPER value and performing model TV is drying up quick.

Imo there are 1 or 2 lcds that can compete with the top ten plasmas and for the dollar for dollar none.

I think it's worth adding that the Panasonic models have been completely trouble free with burn in/image retention issues. Also there is a break-in disc available for $6.50 to further add to our comfort level.

Has anybody here ever heard of a problem?

Another thing I would like to point out is that if a salesperson knows more than you do about what you are buying, it's not good. The info is here on these sites, not in those stores.

I am currently in the market for a 50 or 52 inch TV, and am debating the Panasonic Plasma versus a Mitsu LCD, Samsung A650, or the Sony XBR6.
The reason I am still considering the LCD are,
1. Brighter panel in a room with windows. Plasmas seem to reflect light.
2. Weight is less
3. Motion blur not an issue on 120hz TVs.
4. still worry about burn in.

I realize the Plasma is better color wise, but I am not sure that LCD is that far behind. I bought a 42 inch Hitachi Plasma last year, and left my Playstation 3 on while it was updating and came back to some burn in. However, after wiping the screen, the burn in was gone. Image retention still seems to be a concern. I didn't believe this would happen due to the TV having all the most recent screen saving tech, rotating pixels and all that crap. I am concerned about coming home and finding out my wife left Elmo on while getting kids out the door, and I will have burnt in the Elmo DVD menu.
I believe ultimately LCD with kill off Plasma. There are a lot of people out there that bought Plasma in the early days, and are now buying strictly LCD because of their previous experience.
Correct me on my concerns. I would like to buy Panasonic, I have had incredible luck with their products, and have a 26 inch LCD from them that is fantastic. Everything is so well thought out.

All of you concerns shouldnt be a problem. Ivè got a bay window in the lr and dont have issues and if it were critical viewing just close the blinds. There is only 1 lcd that can resolve full resolution with motion all the others are less then 700 lines. That alone is enough for me.

I agree. I've talked with three custom installers/salesmen just in the last week. I realized how much I've picked up, and appreciated just how much of this info that even these fellows did not know. One of them is involved with some insane million dollar build (full mch JLA, Crestron, custom concrete, etc). At the end of the conversation, he was curious in having me come along for consultations! lol, but I think he would prefer if I was certified in some manner. I gave him various tips, explained to him some details of some speakers he just sold, explained Audyssey, room acoustics, and I particularly recommended Dennis Erskine for future consults, since they are paying more elsewhere for someone I never heard of. I did also mention Rives, and let him know that gets up there, but the level 1 is rather affordable. And to think I started all this with an HTIB just two years ago.

My brother just picked up a Panny plasma as secondary display. It doesn't even have any instructions regarding break-in, or burn-in prevention. Great price, $1,199 for a 50" 1080p 80u equivalent, but to be honest, there are some sick deals on Pioneer right now. Search my posts on 5020 sale for instance.

I only have experience with LCD technology. I own a 42" Sharp 1080p LCD. It's a great tv. I bought it in fall 2007. Yes, there's motion blur, and yes the black level sucks. But you know what, the image is bright, and really sharp, and the image has a great 3d pop. My living room is open concept, so there's always light.

To me, that is the benefit of LCD. That it can be viewed anywhere. A plasma simply would not work in that room at all. There's just too much glare. Also, I'm weary of burn ins. I've read some threads over at AVS where people had a temporary or so Image retention on the 2008 Panasonic and Samsung models from Game HUDs, or from using "black" bars instead of "grey". If you're going to have to be using gray bars, that defeats the purpose of the black levels to a great extent.

The next time I replace my sharp, I will probably look into a 120hz or 240hz LED display.

The brightness of my last LCD

caused a gamma ray pulse

to burn an image of Rosie

into my freakin' retina. I have since clawed my eye out.
Now look at me.

Don't let this happen to you. Buy a Panny Plasma. :D

I don't know what surprised me more - that you are surrounded by books, or your doll on the bookcase.

Then again, monkeys like dolls, right?

It took me a while to spot the doll. My depth perception is off. ;)

I thought I read that people turn their 120Hz thing off cause it makes the picture look cartoonish. Panasonics don't burn in. Panasonics have anti reflective screens. If you must have the sensation of starring into a bright sun, it's outside. :p

Sorry, the last part was really uncalled for. :D

Catchy tune...;) As for the debate let it rage because in the end, it won't alter/sway my decision, as to which one is better.
