"Clicking" Issue When DirectTV Receiver Is Set To DOLBY DIGITAL

I just hooked up my new receiver and 5.1 surround sound. The only issue I have is when I set my Direct TV receiver to Dolby Digital. After I click Dolby Digital to "Yes" on the Direct TV receiver I get a "clicking" noise every minute or so (it's the same sound that I get when I manually switch listening modes). Any insight?

Thanks much.

There seem to be digital drop outs. The first thing to check is the cable. The Direct TV DVRs have optical and 75 ohm SPDIF out via coax.

If you are using optical try a new cable, as optical cables are easily damaged.

If you are using coax, make sure you are using a good quality 75 ohm digital RCA cable.

There is a lot of nonsense on these forums about using any old RCA cable. Sometimes you will get away with it, but often not. Unless a digital cable terminates as a perfect transmission line, then you get reflections up and down the cable, which cause cancellations and lost data, which can defeat the error correction Reed/Solomon codes in your receiver's DAC.

The most likely cause of your problem, is a poor cable or a wrongly terminated one.
