Honestly, it depends on the pixel shape and the overscan. If this TV has a good bit of overscan, then 2.35/1 movies just might show up with no black bars. 2.76:1 movies are so rare that I don't think the makers of sets care right now.
Yes, people really do hate black bars that much--hence the sales of full screen DVD's, CIH projectors and anamorphic lenses for projectors.
There are a LOT of people who have rooms that cannot accommodate displays larger than 42" (or even 32"). Believe me, I tried to tell many people to go as big as they could. My 57" DLP seems small in my great room, but on the floor next to a person, I realize that it is still a large screen. Honestly, I wanted a 73" when I bought it but could not justify spending another $1k+.
