Who makes a light that you can put behind your flat panel tv for ambient lighting purposes? I know I saw something like that before, but I can't remember where. I know Phillips has something like that built into some of their tv's, but who else makes something similar?

I have a blacklight in my bedroom, and while it's not behind the tv, it really doesn't put out much actual visible light, but it does make some things in the room glow and look pretty cool... I may get the dioder for my bedroom setup when the Ikea up the road from me opens up next month.

I've seen the Ikea model at a friend's house. I found it to be too bright. Can it be dimmed?

I'm sure you could just put some electircal tape or something over some of the leds to dim it down some... after all it will be hidden so who cares if it looks silly.

I went cheap. I bought a regular lightbulb that is close to 6500k (white) and wrapped it in tinfoil. Poked a few holes in it and plugged in into the receiver. After a few tweaks I have a white backlight with the right amount of light that switches on when I turn on the receiver. All for about $5.

Thanks... I also came across something called Dioder on the Ikea website, those look to be exactly what I need as well.
Dioder ??? Sounds like some cheap generic deodorant....."dioder, apply directly to the armpit!"

All kidding aside, that looks like it would work for you. Is it dimmable? Leave it to Ikea to have weird names for stuff:rolleyes:

I've been using a regular 24" fluorescent light velcroed behind my display for years. The "sticklight" fixtures can be bought at any hardware store pretty cheaply. I've seen those lights sold by the home theatre companies for hundreds of dollars, but they didn't actually look any different to me than a 'Warm White' fluorescent.
Also, those 'Dioder' lights at Ikea are the exact things I've seen at Costco for about $40.
The important thing is having a diffused, indirect light shining on the wall behind your display. Really makes for an ideal lighting situation for TV.

I hate checking their receipts, why can't they translate the damn things?:D
I saw the light thingies at ikea and it seems they are not dimmable. I'll continue my led experiments and go diy.

I wasn't actually looking at these for me, but for a friend of mine... Although I may consider getting something at some point if I like what I see when he gets his done.
