Have to have surgery :(

Not to hijack the thread but on Monday I go in for surgery for an umbilical hernia. I will be out for 4-6weeks but I probably won't return to work since I despise my job. That should give me a few weeks to look for a pt job since I will be going back to school in a few months anyway.

Chicks dig scars.

I think it's fair to say most North American's have weak abdominal muscles.

There's been a lot of good advice here, and much of it sounds like it came from experience. No heavy lifting and take your pain meds.

Good luck with the surgery, enjoy watching those movies, but hold off on the funny ones for a while, cause laughing might hurt for a few days.

Thaks everyone. I know all about taking doctor's orders. I don't know about this surgery, but the pain from the hernias wasn't as bad as breaking my femur in my major car accident, so this one is manageable in comparison so far. I was out for 3 months when I had surgery for my leg and I expect the recovery no particular amount of fun this time either (though at least much shorter). I definitely have to take it easy though. I ran a few errands yesterday and after a few hours it did become quite sore again, so I had to sit for a few hours after that. I don't feel older, but I suppose I am getting there. I haven't even hit the big 40 yet

No kidding about the funny movies causing issues though, as I believe this may have actually been triggered by sneezing or subsequently blowing my nose, about the only thing I can think of. I sneezed yesterday and it put a LOT of pressure on the hernia causing a fair amount of pain. I injured my back when I was 18 by sneezing in a bad position, and I am not exactly a couch potato. That one was pretty funny - I was cooking something and I leaned over to reach something and sneezed suddenly while I was arched over and BAM, I couldn't even stand up.

The only nagging thing in the back of my mind is that my aunt went in for knee surgery last year. Fairly common procedure, for a non-life threatening condition and a blood clot ended up getting into her heart and she passed away on the table. I wouldn't say that could be called a common occurrence, but it still concerns me. My blood tests came back with everything else quite normal, so there are no underlying issues with me that we know of that could complicate the surgery - I don't smoke, I drink socially, no history of medical issues, so that is all on my side. My recovery from my leg surgery went without a hitch and I recovered very quickly (I had to learn to walk all over again) because I am a determined person, so my outlook is good from my standpoint. No matter what though, the thought of surgery does make me uncomfortable still.

I am not sure what Sheep means by that, but I still enjoy his banter on all things audio, movies and definitely vehicles.

Hey, John. I can relate to your concerns about something happening during surgery. I sure would be nervous. It's certainly a risk, but in reality, I'm guessing that it's a lower risk than driving to work everyday. I was scared for my parents when they underwent surgery (they both donated a kidney, for which I'm very proud of them), but everything went just fine. They were at Mayo Clinic, which is probably one of the best medical centers in the country, though.

You could always wire yourself up to a few pounds of C4 with a dead man's switch - that might give the doctors a little extra incentive to do it right. :D

Sorry to hear that John. I hope the surgery goes well.

Sucks getting old doesn't it? I used to exercise and play sports all the time. Now I've got a bad ankle, bad knees and I always have to be cognizant of my lower back when I work out. Lame.

This, boys and girls, is why you don't power push when taking a dump.

When are you going in? You have all things in your favor (like being young, not smoking/drinking etc., family support and us! :D). We are going to be right here when you need us (some more than others  :D).

Best wishes and recover quickly.

John,

Sorry about your pain. Hpope surgery goes well. At least is sounds like something they can correct pretty easily and arthroscopic surgery has low initial impact and a much faster recovery time.

Good luck again :) May have to lower the sub level for awhile :D

Sound On and get better,

Yep. After my car accident, I had a lot of minor complications that limit what I can do physically, and it really blows. For all the abuse I put my knees through with 10+ years of skateboarding, I am surprised they aren't an issue for me, so that is good. My ankles are strong from years of soccer :) Apparently my abdomen didn't benefit from any of that activity though.

LOL. Don't make me laugh :D

Everything went well and I am now just about able to walk upright. It is still painful, especially around the incision, but I am well on the road to recovery. Will likely be a few days yet. Most activities are still slow for me, but just a matter of time before I am back to normal.

This time next week, you will hardly know you had surgery.

John, very glad to here everything went well. Thus, it sounds like you are well on your way for a full recovery. Just be sure to get enough rest so that the incision will heal properly. If there is anything I can do, please let me know. As always, I will keep you in my prayers. :):)

Cheers,

Phil

Glad everything went well and your on the road to recovery, although that road may seem long at times its better to do it in small steps.

Regards, Bill :)
