Using a Blu-ray as a decoder question?

Say you are using a panny 55 and run 7.1 analog to your receiver, but you only have 5.1 hooked up to your receiver. What does it do with that extra information that would be going to the surrounds?

For the Panasonic BD55, if you are only using the 5.1 mulitchannel analog outs from the receiver to the Blu-ray player this is how you would set it up in the menu for the BD55.

1) Turn HDMI audio output to OFF.
2) Set Analog Audio Output to 2ch(Downwmix) + 5.1ch - using this connection 7.1 channel surround is mixed down to 5.1 channel audio.
3) Set speaker size (large, small), delay time, speaker/sub levels in the BD55 for calibrating.

I am only dreaming right now just kinda wanted to know how it would happen in the future

To be clear you would only hook it up 5.1 analog to the receiver and set the settings in the player accordingly?

The previous example was for someone who just has a 5.1 setup.

If you have a 7.1 setup hook up all 7.1 multichannel analog outs from the receiver to the Blu-ray player and set it up like this in the player (BD55).

1) Turn HDMI audio output to OFF
2) Set Analog Audio Ouput to 7.1ch
3) Set speaker size, delay times, sub/speaker levels.

I forgot to mention in my previous post you can set BD-Video Secondary Audio to OFF and depending on your television you might need to turn off 24p output ( this setting is for 1080/24p via HDMI).

The BD55 is an excellent player BTW . I love mine .

I hope to own my very own one day. I know it's pure speculation but how long before you see these things start coming down in price? I am not so much worried about spending the dough on the player but buying and renting blu rays would certainly add up. Especially when your poor like me!

Hey Murl apparently Panasonic is already looking to replace their current BR player line up, so watch out for the pending price drop. Another thing you could do is rent, although the BR selection aren't extensive they cost about the same as dvd. My local shop offers 2 BR movies for 8.99, of course they aren't current titles but still excellent movies. Food for thought?
