This is my first set of speakers. Don't need audiophile gear just best bang for buck.

*USE: 75% HT 25% music.
*RECEIVER: onkyo 606
*ROOM: 24' x 34' loft with 20' ceiling and concrete walls across speakers. One huge room. I am thinking I will need towers to fill this space.
*BUDGET: $400-$600 for 5.0 or 5.1 Willing to wait on sub if I can get towers.
*TASTES: I don't need to play loudly I just care about clear dialogue during movies and a good range to capture all the sounds of a movie.

Any suggestions?
Can anyone comment on some of these systems I have been reseraching/considering.

Fluance AV-HTB+ $199 for 5.0 ~$500 after sub and shipping costs.

Go for the EMP's, Man. Right now, with current prices, I don't know what can beat it. You'll probably want to upgrade the sub at some point b/c of the amount of space you're trying to fill, but that would be an excellent system, especially for your first setup.

I haven't heard teh others but have heard the Energies and they off very potent performance, espcially for that little money.

I would also go with the energy's. I have energy c-500's at home, and they are superb.

I agree with soundman. I have the EMP 551T 5.1 system and couldn't be happier. I haven't heard the others but they would have to be absolutely spectacular. If you go with the EMP though, make sure you have a sub.

The EMP's are a great deal right now. Some alternatives include the Mirage Nanosat 5.1 system and the Energy Take 5.1 system. Both of these can be had for around $600.

I definitely vote for the EMP's. I would suggest the Infinity Primus towers when they're on sale at Fry's, but you won't get a (good) sub within your budget.

Sold out quick

I would also go with the energy's. I have energy c-500's at home, and they are superb.
Unfortunately the packages with the c-500 sold out quick. The do have packages with the c-300 towers, c-c50 center, & c50 surrounds for $399 or $515 with the sub. I guess the single 6.5" speaker in the towers will be a better match to the smaller 4.5" speakers on the centers and surrounds. Good for home theater not so good for stereo music.

I haven't fully given up on the EMP speakers either I think I am going to call and see if the will sell the 351T system for the same price they had on here last month. The 551T system looks like a real quality speaker and I am sure it sounds great but I am just worried that I wont get a dynamic range with all the speakers at 4". The sub is going to have to work some of those lower mids.

How is the range on the EMP?

I agree with soundman. I have the EMP 551T 5.1 system and couldn't be happier. I haven't heard the others but they would have to be absolutely spectacular. If you go with the EMP though, make sure you have a sub.
What other systems did you consider/hear before going with the EMP line. Now that you have them, what do you think they compare with? I haven't heard them and probably won't get a chance to before I buy them. Just trying to get an idea of the warmth or brightness of the sound.

The other thing that has me thinking is how the range on these speakers are with all 4" speakers. I am sure they are all great quality 4" speakers but in the end the 4" will not produce the lows of a 5.25" or 6.5" speaker. Would you mind giving a more thorough review of the performance of the speakers high, mids and lows (which I assume the sub has to go come up a bit for).

thanks

Energy system or bargain hunt in the used market.

I landed an amazing deal on some M&K speakers and subwoofer the other day for under $200. You do enough research and look hard and long enough at plenty places and you may find a diamond in the rough. I found mine a month or so ago in a Cash America pawn shop, a pair of Paradigm Studio/100v1 floor standing speakers for $199.

Patience can be very rewarding.:)

Before I purchased mine, I had been looking for awhile. I listened to every speaker I could find in the big box stores around my area. Polk (Monitors, TSI, RTI), Infinity (forget which line), Klipsch (quintets along with another line). I went to a couple of higher end shops in my area but almost all of their equipment was set up at Homearama so it was hard to find equipment to listen to. I tried to listen to 5.1 set-ups in 1500-2000 price range that I could find near me. My budget was originally $3000 but buying an engagement ring and then saving for a wedding has a tendency to cut into ones budget…..which is another reason why EMP was a welcome option.

I have no idea what other brand I would really compare the 551’s to. In my opinion the EMP’s are a neutral speaker and slightly unforgiving to flaws in the source material. I don’t consider myself an absolute audioholic by any means. I used to play clarinet and was also percussionist back in the day so I’ve done, and still do, more than my fair share of drum tuning so I like to think that I’m not completely deaf. There was no other line of speaker in my budget that I listened to that made me feel that the extra money was going to get me much more, if anything at all. From what I listened and comparing the notes that I took, I would have had to pay at least $1000 more to notice a difference. With that said, if I were to pay full price for the EMP’s I would be very discriminating because in that price range there is a lot of competition.

If there is one knock on these it’s that I have the crossover set fairly high (100Hz) but since I’m using them with a sub it’s a non-issue for me. Localization hasn’t been an issue. When using the audio test that is included on my THX DVD’s, there is a little that was lost while crossing over. I’m not sure if that’s my fault or a fault of the systems but it wasn’t enough to make me feel that a larger driver would have done the trick. The mid-mids to the upper ends are great. It’s just that one little area but it’s something that I would have never noticed and still haven’t noticed in movies or in music. Since I bought them I have been going through different parts of my CD collection. I just got through my classical cd’s and the speakers performed great. Shostakovich's String Quartets and Rachmaninov’s Vocalise (on violin, not the vocal) were the standouts. The only thing that I felt could have been better were some French horn ruffs to the upper register in Shostakovich’s 8th but that seems like it would be a hard instrument to reproduce anyway. I just recently started in on my fusion collection and so far so good. For rock I listened to Incubus’s S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album. It handled Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song) just fine. Since that is one of my more bass hungry CD’s I thought that would be a good indicator. For movies, they do what they are supposed to do. Admittedly, I’m not as picky for movies. Dialogue comes across a lot better than I originally though giving the size of the center channel.

I’ve tried to keep this as short while giving a broad spectrum of what I've noticed without being too subjective which was harder than I though. Kudos to those of you who can write good reviews. I’m completely satisfied with the EMP’s. As previously stated, I haven’t listened to the other speakers mentioned in this thread but it would be hard to imagine one of them being heads and tails above what the EMP’s are. For me it was a delicate balance of cost, performance, and time. The EMP’s fit my equation beautifully. As Seth=L said, patience is rewarding. There will always be a better deal in the future; it’s just a question of if you want to wait for it. Hope this helped at least a little bit. If you have any other questions let me know.

Good Advice... I just feel like I gotta jump on these limited time deals but there will always be more deals. Especially if the economy doesn't turn around soon. I never thought of checking pawn shops. They always seem a bit shady but then they may not even know what they have and what its worth when it comes to audio gear.

I have been checking craigslist...

I picked up a pair of Polk Audio RT7s with a Kenwood stereo receiver on Craigslist a few months ago for $50. I sold the receiver for $30 to a pawn shop, it had serious SNR issues. Great deals can be had on craigslist.:)

No corporate pawn shops in your area? What makes you feel that the pawn shops are shady? Remember that you should always test before you buy, especially with speakers, since many pawn shops have little to know warranty. Pawn shops often don't do cash back either. Always ask about return policies before buying.

I found Boston Acoustics CR77s for $40 off Craigslist for giggles and they rocked my face off. I found myself selling an entire Polk RTi rig which I'd thought was good but sounded muffled in the mid-bass and sharp up top when placed next to the Bostons. I went to Electronics Expo and added "matching" surrounds from the Classic Series which replaced the CR line last year, hooked up my powered sub, and it's been a true low-budget revelation. Now I just need to find a CRC7 center in good shape used (preferably cheap, too) and I'll be done for a few years.

Amazon is selling the equivalent bookshelf to my CR77 - the CS26, for around $70 each shipped if you're interested. You could get five of them for $350 and a sub of your choice and come in nicely at or under budget, and if you think they stink send 'em back and move on. I haven't heard anything at the price that sounds more neutral and detailed without fatigue to me. Good luck in the search!

I have to agree with the craigslist comments. I got Kef 2001.2s for 40 each from a betrayed ex-wife. They work great for surrounds because they are small and still have great sound.

Energy EMP RBH

Has anyone had success with the RBH WM-30's? At $119 a pop they seem like a good deal. The frequency response is good too at 47Hz-20kHz.

What about other Energy, EMP, or RBH speakers?

I was also interested in the Energy Take 5.2 paired with a reasonable subwoofer.

Thanks!

Hey, I'm trying to PM but it wont let me so I've got to post! I've currently got RTi10s and I have someone near me selling 6/10 quality, scratched (albeit not bad) Paradigm Studio/100v1s for 600. I could probably negotiate this down a little ways.

Are the paradigms 100v1s better than what I've got supposing I sell the RTi10s for 350-400? Can anyone give me info as to how the 100v1 sounds? This is really directed at Seth but I cannot PM sooo!!

Thanks! All info appreciated. I will listen to the sellers speakers of course when I get a chance to drive out there but I currently know hardly anything about them. All is appreciated.

Some good sounding speakers that would be timbre matched would be the Insignia speakers sold at BestBuy for 75.00/pair (less when they are frequently on sale) so three pair would be 225.00 I would use the remianing money on a DIY sub from PartsExpress and you would have a great entry level system for your budget of around 500.00

I bought a pair of Insignias just to hear what the buzz was about and after some very cheap modifications, the speaker is actually really quite good for the price. Also the post office always has a 10% off BestBuy in their movers packet which is free to pick up.

BTW forgot to mention that the Insignias are the bookshelf versions with the 6.5" mid range and the 4/5" tweeter inset in the mid range for that KEF UniQ type design. The speakers actually has pretty decent bass extension (enough to blend in well with a sub) and for the cost it is a pretty solid well built speaker.

Seriously?

I doubt they sound like KEFs though.
