A friend of mine is looking for a new AVR. His minimum requirements are 6 HDMI, Audessey Multi EQ, and 2 or more Sub pre outs. He would appreciate suggestions of Make and Models.

Thanks,engtaz

AFAIK the only AVR that meet your criteria is the Denon AVR-5308. Expect to pay over $5.5k.

As much as I loathe Sony products, I think their 6400 and 5400 ES AVRs are the only other ones you will find that have six HDMI inputs. Neither of them have 2 sub preouts, but I think this requirement isn't necessary, as a Y-cable is all you need for 2+ subs. It is a very rare thing for an AVR to have 2 sub outputs (i.e. only Denon and Yamaha flagships, AFAIK). They also don't have Audyssey, but instead have a proprietary Sony room correction system.

I would recommend your friend consider a separate HDMI switch and subwoofer Y-cable to expand options (and possibly reduce budgetary concerns) substantially.

My monoprice 4X1 HDMI switch works perfectly, and it was very inexpensive. They also have 5X1 HDMI 1.3 switches.

Hope this helps!

He has that switch and dislikes it. It does not program well with Harmoney remotes. LOL

Fair enough :). I suppose if only room correction by Audyssey will do then he should go for the Denon AVR-5308, or if other room correction is ok, then one of the Sonys and a subwoofer y-cable.

He could go with the automatic switcher from Oppo, which has gotten great reviews. With it, if things are switched off (and if "off" really turns off the HDMI output), it will automatically switch to whatever one is turned on. It also does a priority, such that if one has one item that always has an active HDMI output, it can be plugged into the lowest priority, so that when one of the other two connected devices is turned on, it will automatically switch to the unit turned on. Of course, one can also manually switch things, too. When I need more HDMI inputs than I now have, I will probably buy one myself.

I had an Impact Acoustics 6x2 component video switch and had zero problems using it with my Harmony 880. What can I say except that it just worked flawlessly. He may just have to break down and buy a name brand switch to have it pair it with the Harmony. In fact if memory serves the Harmony application had the Impact Acoustics switch in its menu. They make both a 3 and 5 port HDMI switch and that should save him a ton of money. Use two ports from the receiver and 5 from the switch or whatever works for him.

Im just curious as to the need for 6 hdmi inputs? Also untill you get into the flagships dual sub outs are a joke as the output is dictated by a single crossover.

Just so you might clarify for yourselves, I can list about 7 products made by Audyssey off the top of my head. There are at least 3 products that are superior in resolution to MultEQ. FYI.

What price range is your friend looking at?
The 6 HDMI inputs in one device is going to kill him in the price department.

How about the Denon AVR-2309?

I like Denon because I have used lots of their stuff and have had no problems with them, aside from some recent Audyssey issues with center channel output, which could be the fault of Denon or Audyssey, it is tough to say. They seem to have pretty decent quality control on their stuff.

The Onkyo TX-SR606 and up have 4 HDMI, but I have recently been steered away from that brand in general based on quality control and customer service issues that others have had.
