2009... so far it sucks

Hi Ho

Hi Ho

Audioholic Samurai
Last night after I was done with a long day of work and ready for the weekend the owner of the business for which I have worked over two and a half years installing and servicing audio video equipment pulled me into the conference room and told me I was being laid off. This couldn't have come at a worse time (financially) and what really makes me angry is that I was their senior installer. I had more knowledge about my job than most of the people that work there. The guy that did not get laid off was hired only three months ago, knows very little about the field, hates the job, and is getting paid more than I was! If that is not screwed up then I don't know what is. I also find it aggravating that an employer asks for two weeks notice when an employee is going to quit but they have no problems terminating a senior employee due to "the economy" with absolutely no notice at all. They did this all while my boss and good friend was on vacation for the week. He would have fought this with all he had.

I am so depressed. I wouldn't go back there after this even if they beg. The term, the world is not fair, certainly rings true today.

Damn that really sucks man. I hope for the best for you. You will get another gig if you are good at your job. Bad news to hear but also a chance for you to put your head up and find the positive in this. It sounds to me like you were not being treated fairly and getting paid less than you should have is also on the down side. I wish all the best for you and hope you find a job quickly. That really sucks to hear. I am sorry keep your head up...:)

sounds like a bigbox store type of decision. What kind of decision is that to keep the uninterested noob, and let go of the experienced, interested, and long time employee? sheesh. Smart manager/ownership.

Sorry to hear this!:( It is a reminder that businesses aren't making money like they used to be. The owner is a scum sucker IMO...

That is most unfortunate, but all too common at present.

Take heart, you are not depressed. You have not had enough time to qualify for depression! You have a depressed mood appropriate to your sudden change of circumstances. However you will drift into depression over time if you don't keep your wits about you and make a plan.

I bet that new employee will get a big cut in salary.

First decide if you want to stay in this line of work. If not train in something else. This is a good time to do it.

If you want to stay in this business, if you are not CEDIA certified then get it.

In the meantime try and generate some cash as independent installer. Try and get a web site up.

Above all stay flexible. The bankers, captains of industry and a series of governments here and abroad have run up a hell of a ticket. Unfortunately I have a feeling there are quite likely more Bernie Madofs out there. I personally don't think he could have continued so long, unless there was corruption at some of the highest levels of government. Despite our President elect's good intentions, serious problems are likely to remain intractable for a few years.

A very large number of businesses will not survive this. The last estimate I read thinks that 3000 to 5000 major American retailers will go through bankruptcy in the next 2 years. I think it highly likely Best Buy will be right behind Circuit City. They have laid off 400 administrative staff at their headquarters in Richfield MN recently, just to give one example.

However, we will emerge from this. How and when remains unclear, so you have to be flexible and look for opportunity as things shake out. It may well be that the age of big business has already been eclipsed. It is quite likely, that we will be entering the age of the ascendancy of very small business.

Sorry to hear that.

We laid off one lot guy here at Lexus, but he sucked as his job. I ended up re-doing everything he did, and didn't complain because I wanted him fired. Any chance I got to make him look like crap I took.

Toyota was an awful job, stayed there way too long, but becasue the Lexus dealership I went to shares the lot, I still get the pleasure of seeing them suffer every day.

You didn't say who you worked for or give details on what kind of dealership it is, but if you have been doing this kind of work for any time, you name is already out there, for good or bad. Once the others find out, if their business is doing much, you may be getting a call fairly soon. Also, while employers request two weeks, it's not mandatory if you live in an "At Will Employment" state. You can find out about this from your state's website. One recommendation I have is to look into this. If you're over 40 years old, check into age discrimination if you want. The fact that they pay the new guy more than you tells me that he either scammed his way into that pay or has some knowledge that you may not. No offense, but there has to be a reason they pay him this much, other than the fact that he may not need benefits.

If you already do audio, video, voice and data wiring and some networking, if you like what you do, want to work on more extensive jobs and possibly commercial/government projects, pass on CEDIA and look into BICSI. It's much more intensive and anyone who knows the difference will pick you over a CEDIA certified installer. CEDIA is more for residential and BICSI is geared more toward commercial work but many, if not all, government projects require BICSI certification. You'll have some time on your hands and if you have worked there for any length of time, you should receive unemployment pay. While it won't be like working, it helps.

Here's a link to their training facilities in WA:
https://www.bicsi.org/ams/authorized_training_fac.aspx

If you call them, they will spend some time giving out the details of what they are and do.

Not to sound callous but IMO, everyone needs to lose at least one job. It serves as a helluva reality check and makes us realize that everyone can be replaced and nobody is immune.

Wow, sorry to hear about that! Something smells afoul if the other guy was making more than you, is less experienced and still there. I could understand it if you were a senior in your position and made more; think Circuit City.

As for wanting a two week notice but not giving you one, that is pretty standard. The reason most employers don't give you a notice and let you work is because they figure; a) you are a lame duck with no interest in doing your job, or b) you will take it out on them and actually do a lot of harm by theft, sabotage, etc. I hope he at least had the courtesy of giving you a severance, which is common. If not, I would go back and ask for one.

Things are tough these days, for a lot of folks. We just let a guy go yesterday but it was from non and poor performance. There is no telling how many customers we have lost or will continue to lose because of his poor work.:( He was pulled into the boss' office on more than one occasion and warned but he would only improve for a couple of weeks or so. Too bad for him as I know he is in deep financial doo-doo as well.

Best wishes to you on finding another job.

aren't you supposed to get a separation pay for the number of years you have served for the company?

God Bless in whatever future plans you make.

One of the employees at our sister store just got laid off, but I honestly think the guy needed to leave (he missed a lot of work).

A company should be able to fire people for whatever reason they want. It might just be that the economy is bad and they don't have enough work for him and maybe that guy is next. But if they just don't like him, thats a good enough reason to me.

I know you mean well, I just don't think recommending checking into an age discrimination suite is the route to go. It's a drain on American resources and won't help him very much.

Yeah, last time I checked the United States government was sending them in space. Guess, that is why Alex seems so spaced out most of the time!!!! :p:p

Thank you all for the supportive comments. I know it will all work out. I just don't know how. I actually was getting tired of the job. The daily grind was getting to me. It was a 45 minute commute each way. I had to deal with clueless customers explaining the same things over and over... and over... and then a few more times. It gets tiresome. I guess it's kind of a relief but now I have to figure out so many things so quickly. I thought I had more time. I think the things I will miss the most are a couple people I worked closely with and the deep discounts I got on equipment to feed this crazy home theater hobby.

I have been considering going to school. I like working with professional audio equipment. I've looked into schooling for audio production. What I am most worried about now are bills that I must pay. I will be broke within weeks if I don't have sufficient income. I made some less than favorable financial decisions in the past year. Mainly buying more gadgets rather than paying down a not so large chunk of debt that will only be interest free through May. I will never fall into that again. It is too easy to put off payments when you don't have to make them and buy more stuff with the money.
