DTS not working

i have a jvc older receiver, about 5 years old, now it has 1 optical and 1 coaxial hook up, no the coaxial says (dvd) beside it and the optical says (cd) beside it, now on the back of my dvd player i have both hooked up, so when i go to settings on my receiver and go to digital in, it says 1 dvd 2 t.v and i can change it through out, but when i change it to 1 cd 2 dvd, i cant get sound through the optical cable, what is going on here? i am also using a movie supported by DTS, ive never been able to get dts to work it just sits there searching for it on my receiver.

My guess is that you need to set the DVD player up to output DTS as a bitstream. A lot of DVD players (at least, they used to) were set up by default to either not output DTS or to output it as PCM. It's possible that your DVD player can't handle DTS, but it would need to be fairly old for that to be the case (I think).

If you have questions about that, let us know which receiver model you have and which DVD player you have.

well im not at home right now so when i get home i can give you both models, but i know both support dts.

I will second that, bitstream is the most likely culprit for dts. You don't need both coaxial and optical connected, as they will give you the same thing. Getting NO sound means something is assigned wrong, try switching inputs to see if it shows up on a different one.

i know both arent supose to be hooked up, and ive went through all them and still wont work. model of receiver is RX-6030V JVC and the dvd player is XV-N40 JVC

Page 9 of the manual (which is page 11 of the PDF file) discusses how to set up the player to output the DTS track when you have the player connected to a receiver that can decode DTS. It's at the top left portion of the page.

ok didnt know about that screen, but when i went into it, it was already set for DTS. now i finally got it to switch from coax to optical, but still no DTS coming through. just sits there flashing, so it must be the receiver that isnt decoding it?

Check out page 17 of the owner's manual for the receiver (available at the link here, and it's page 19 of the PDF file). It discusses how you can select between having the receiver automatically detect the surround mode and manually selecting Dolby Digital or DTS. Try manually selecting DTS. BTW, I'm assuming that you are actually playing the DTS soundtrack on a DVD (not being patronizing, but on my DVDs, I have to go in and select that track).

no thats what i was talking about i select dts manualy, and it just sits there flashing meaning its not finding dts. and yes i made sure the movie had dts, it was the fast and the furious, first dvd i picked out and had it so i used it.

did you setup dts as the soundtrack in the disc menu??

Hostility, this has been mentioned twice - and it's for a reason. Be sure to check that, and please let us know if you do have it set to the DTS track. Like I said earlier, DTS isn't the default track on a lot of DVDs, so be sure to select it. Sometimes, you need to do that from the menu because you can't change it on the fly during playback.

I didn't put the disc in my player, but it shows the menu on the back cover.

On the main menu, select "Languages". It should let you pick from Dolby Digital and DTS on that menu.

finally, for the first time it works! lol, thanks adam, i just wouldent think that audio would be under language. so i guess everytime i play a dts movie i have to select it on the disc. also what do you guys think works best, optical or coaxial?

either, i pefer coaxial for conneection reasons only....same signal in runs under 25'
