I just joined today afetr reading an article from a few years ago by Ken Stein about building speakers.
I would like to try this as an informational exercise and also save some money.
ANy forums out there that deal with this or any kits you can recommend.

Thanks
I look forward to learning more about it.

I'd recommend the Mission Possible DIY forum on HTGuide.com. There are several types of designs under the Mission Accomplished sub-forum. I'm building some of those.

You might also want to check out Zaph Audio, Humble Homemade Hifi and the Tech Talk forum at Parts Express.

Parts Express and Madisound sell kits and parts for building speakers. There are a lot more sites out there but these are a good place to start.

WHich are you building and are you building your own cabinettes or building them ?

I have been looking over those sites. It seems the cabinettes are separate.

Here's a good place http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/.

I have built my own sub boxes several times. Even built myself a center channel out of old car audio, didn't work so well with the mismatched ohm's. Been kinda thinking about building myself some speakers myself.

Good luck and have fun with whatever you do.

Which speakers need to be in wall? What are those two speakers for music listening, in wall, or not, part of your HT system or not?

What kind of woodworking tools do you have an access to? How are your woodworking skills?

I'm building Natalie P floorstanders for the front L and R, a smaller Natalie P center and Modula MTs for surrounds.

I am building cabinets but these speakers could be built using pre-made Parts Express cabinets.

You might want to look into some of the non baffle step designs if you want in-wall or on-wall speakers. I think the Modulas and NatPs have non baffle step crossovers.

I'd rate my woodworking skills as beginner to intermediate. The most elaborate thing I have built is an audio rack that I posted in the DIY forum here. I learn something from every project. There are always problems to be solved and mistakes to hide.

I have a pretty good DeWalt router kit and a router table I made, a DeWalt drill and jig saw. I also have a small no-name drill press (literally, there's no branding of any kind, not even on the box), a 5" random orbital sander, a hand planer, a crappy Craftsman table saw and various hand tools.

You sound like a good recruit to the confraternity of speaker builders to me.

Now please give us exact goals of what you want to accomplish. Are your walls still open? What is your room layout? You need to give a lot of detail. or we will waste our time. So far your posts have only told us you want to build some sort of in wall speakers, and some speakers unspecified. That gets us nowhere.

Jim,

Do you have links to the designs? It would be interesting to check them out.

I've almost got all the wood cut for the towers. I'm down with a cold today and didn't feel like sucking sawdust.

My plan is to cut all the wood for the cabinets and braces first. Since I'm using the same drivers all the way around, I can do all the routing with fewer changes.

I guess I've managed to hijack this thread. Hey, OP, I hope you are getting something out of this. :D

As an aside, Rockler is having a sale now, if you're looking to increase your tool inventory. Some things are 50% off.

Thanks but I wish I would have known that before I ordered a biscuit joiner from Amazon.
