If i were to use the optical out from my xbox 360 to my TV and then plug my headphones into the 3.5mm jack on the TV would that defeat the purpose of using the digital optical since id just in the end be using the analog 3.5mm connection? or would i still be able to experience the better quality sound? thanks for any help!

No just plug your headphones in to the nearest headphone out.

No it won't improve your sound to listen from your TV via optical cable.
thank you. would i see an improvement in sound if i were to use the optical cable to my tv and listen to the sound thru the TV? or i would just lose the quality when i use the headphones?

A TV is such an abysmal reproducing device, it would not matter what audio connection you made. It would be just as lousy with one as the other.

why do you say that? and do you have AIM? id like to ask you a few questions if i could.
No, I use Skype. You probably now have the wrong adviser. I'm an old curmudgeon, and I live deep in the Tulgey wood.

You can click on the link in my signature, to see what I have and is of interest to me.

Playing games and mixing voice via a headphone mixer amp, is not something I want to add to my equipment list. You will see my mix panel in the album in my signature.

Try to look at the TV's audio system like a big dog.

You can feed it yesterday's table scraps or hire a famous chef to provide the finest gourmet style cooking for it.

In either case, it all comes out the same.
