I've been doing research on a new HD Home Theater system and have the itch to buy now. Currently I have a Sony 40" S series LCD that i paid $1200 for in June. Also a Playstation 3 60 gig that i paid $500 for last X-mas. My concern for buying new equipment now is this Xmas buying season i can get a 46" S series now for the same price i paid for the 40" in JUNE! and a 120 gig Playstation 3 for what i paid for 60gig! I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-SR706 on sale at Vann's.com for $479.97. They say they're having a 30% off holiday "sale". I was going to pair it with the Polk RM95 system or the Mirage Prestige system (which one?) RM95 system is on "sale" for $499 with PSW10 sub or you can substitute for bigger sub for a little more. The Mirage system is $799 without sub and about another $250 to add a sub. Anyway i don't have the funds so i have to do the ol 12 months no interest financing. I also still have my old A/V equipment in my home theater area. Cant afford furniture for new big screen yet (planning for summer time) , so i have my big screen and PS3 in spare bedroom. Anyway to make a long story short, what do you think of my choices and are these really great deals that i can't pass up or if i wait till next summer or next x'mas will i get all this for an even better deal?

Welcome to the forum!

In general, technology gets better and cheaper as time goes on. Now, you might not see that in a three or four month period - a great sale now may be a better price then you'll see for months. However, I doubt that any deal now will beat what you can get next summer or Christmas. A lot of companies refresh their receiver lines in late spring and summer, so this year's models will become cheaper as stores try to offload them.

The question is if you want it now (and will really benefit from it now). After all, it might be cheaper in six months, but you will have enjoyed it for six months by that point. :)

IMO.... your 60GB playstation is the best out of all the versions released. I wouldnt' trade the 60 for the 120.

Others on this forum have pointed out that the after x-mas sales are ofther better than the black friday/pre-x-mas sales. You might be able to save another 10-20% if wait a few more weeks. Also, are you expecting a tax return? If you can wait until tax season then stores will be offloading the remaining 2008 models at a substantial discount.

Yeah- you can always keep waiting for better deals, but as Adam said at some point you have to just pull the trigger so you can actually start enjoying the equipment. Otherwise you're never going to buy something because you'll always be looking and waiting for prices to drop.

To the OP- as long as you can afford to buy now, either in cash or free credit, then I'd go ahead and buy. What's worth more to you, saving $200 next Xmas on the same equipment, or using that equipment fo the next 12 months?

Almost best; 80 gig is best

Actually the previous 80 gig that would support Playstation 2 games through software emulation is the best ;)

my wife wants me to wait till tax season so if your right about there being good deals on the Onkyo txr720 then thats the best way to go for me what do you think about my choices of the Onkyo 720 paired with either the polk audio rm95 group or Mirage prestige nanosat. I want small speakers and those seemed to be the best for the price (check original post for prices) if you have other brands or select models in the 1k to 1.5k range for both reciever and speakers , i'd love to hear feedback.

But does that version have only 2 usb ports instead of the 60s 4? Didn't they also eliminate SACD playback in the first 80gb version? I am not positive... but I included these two features in my overall value.

If you want more HD space on you PS3 you can just buy a laptop SATA drive and upgrade your current console.

I'm not familiar with the receiver or speakers in question. I would just make a list of must-have receiver features and keep you eyes peeled for a good deal on an Onkyo or Yamaha with those features. You might also check out Audio Advisor for speakers. They carry some decent brands at a range of price levels. Also, the Infinity Primus speakers offer some really good bang for the buck and you can find them everywhere.

The Onkyo is a good choice. You may even consider the 606 for about $320 then you can put $1200 into your speakers. I believe the speakers are the most important part of the system and can make the most difference in how your system sounds. Are you looking or a 5.1 or a 7.1 system? I would always consider buying used speakers on Audigon.com. Good brands to look for in that price range are the entry level systems from Energy, PSB, and Paradigm. Those are just some brands I can think of off the top of my head but those are award winning brands. There are plenty of other brands to choose from. Search speaker reviews.
