Sub making constant ticking sound?

Hey guys, NOOB here. I have a Definitive Technologies supercube I hooked to my Pioneer VSX-84TXSI Elite reciever. I bought my sub back in March and have loved it ever since, that is until last night. We were watching the new HULK movie and when the cannons were firing everything sounded great until about half way through the cannons. My sub started making a quick repetitive ticking noise through the speaker, even with the input wire disconnected it makes the noise. I pulled opened up the sub and inspected everything visually and couldn't see anything wrong or burnt. I hooked up my speaker directly to the receiver and it seemed to sound good (although it didn't have near the movement withuot the amp), but no ticking. I plugged the sub system back in without the speaker itself hooked up and the amp made a ticking noise at about half the speed as when the speaker is hooked up.

When I opened the housing to get to the internal amp I noticed some of the screws holding the amp in place had not been run all the way down against the mounting plate, so it was a little bit loose. I'm sure the vibration wasn't good for it. This was purchased brand new as an anniversary gift to me from my wife but when we contacted the seller he informed us he was not an "Authorized Dealer" so we can't get warranty. I'm guessing the amp is bad, I'm considering bringing a sub out of my car that I am no longer using to hook up just to make sure it's not the speaker. Any thoughts?

Any, and all help is greatly appreciated.

The switching power supply in the amp has failed. Did you know you were buying from a dealer who was not authorized? If this was not disclosed, then make him give you your money back.

If you knew, it is your funeral. Your best bet is to by another plate amp and modify the speaker.

My wife thought the guy was a dealer because he had an ebay store, when I looked up the store last night it no longer existed, although ebay says he is still and active ebay member. I found his email address in our paypal account and emailed him, he said he wasn't a dealer and I'd have to talk to DT.
When you say buy plate amp, do you mean order a new amp from Definitive, and how do I need to modify my sub?

The easiest, would be to order a new amp from definitive or have them fix it. That may be prohibitively expensive. So you may have to settle for something like a BASH amp and modify your sub. See if Definitive will help you out.

When I talked to them today they said it sounded like the amp, and I could get one for around $275. I've already pulled the old one out, I was just looking for more input from experienced guys like yourself to make sure I didn't order an amp and find out that wasn't the problem.

Sounds like I'll be ordering that amp. And I hope to continue learning as much as possible from you guys. I've got mythos 2's for my surround (currently used as fronts), and mythos 3 for my center. I still need to order my fronts, looking to get the Mythos 1's or if possible the sts.

I had a similar issue with an athena sub, and was quoted roughly the same price, (however, I was lucky as it was still under warranty). I am absolutely convinced it sounds better ;)
I personally think it would be the most cost effective for you to have DT send you out a new amp and hopefully it will last for as long as you own that sub, or until you keep reading these forums and fall under that evil "upgrade" spell.

Excellent advice from TLS and from Def Tech Customer Support

Hottrawd,

Soory you ran into problems from an unauthorized dealer, that is a bummer. However, you have received excellent advice from TLS. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. Definitive Technology has great customer support also.

Good Luck in getting your sub fixed.

$825 and that included shipping. It was still sealed in the factory box, and when I opened it it definitely new, and for the price paid even buying a new amp I'm still about even I guess. As long as I finish out the three years(original warranty) with no more issues then all is well.
