HI!

I´ve got a denon 3805 and want to know if anyone out there has Bi-amped or added pre/power to their denon?

I´m new to this game but want to know how to get a bit more out of the denon.

many thanks:confused:

Maynardo...Welcome to the forum!!

As for your questions, using the bi-amp function on your receiver is not really useful. This is known as 'passive bi-amping' and provides no sonic advantages. Now as for adding more power, that can be done by purchasing an external amp and using your pre-amp outputs to pass the audio signal to the amp. This will mean your 3805 is just doing the processing and the new will be providing the power...

What are you looking to gain...why do you fell more power?? What kind of speakers to have??? Check out emotiva.com as they have thier XPA-5 channel amp on sale right now for $699....This is a 5 channel amp with 200 watts a channel....alot of bang for your buck....

If you want a significant increase in volume, you need a lot more power output. Doubling the Denon's power will give you about 3dB, depending on your speakers. If they're not very sensitive, it can have a point of diminishing returns. You may double your power but if that's all you're doing, it won't necessarily sound much better because your speakers may not handle it well and your room's acoustics may not be suitable.

There's a spec in acoustics called RT60, which has to do with the reverberation time of the room. If that's too high, more volume only becomes loud, with far less detail. If you already notice a point where the sound changes from clear and detailed to loud, bright and harsh, it's a good bet that you have exceeded the limit for your room. You can add absorptive materials to control this, to a point but how you do it is determined by your budget.

What is your specific goal and what speakers are you using?

He wouldn't be doubling his power. If you have ever looked at receiver power benchtests for 2 channels driven then all channels driven you would notice that the receiver's power is mostly based off it's power supply, not the output stages.

I know- didn't we discuss this about a month ago? I was just trying to find out why he wants more power. Power supply is always a major consideration.

Hey thanks very much for the replies!

Ok so it´s not actually more power I`m looking for but more quality!!

What?

Just wanted to know of ways to improve the sound by not buying a knew system!!!

About Emotiva, I sent them an Email asking for a postage quote to Spain (where I live:cool:) and they wanted 550 dollars ie almost as much as the Amp itself!!!!!

Also I´ve got a Meridian cd player 206 (model b), and this sounds really good thru the Denon on Direct mode. This made me think that perhaps a good stereo amp added to the Denon would help 2 Channel and HT?

RE. speakers: They are German and like Emotiva only available from the Factory ie keeps costs down and quality up!

They have a very good, tight bass and a clear tru sound. If they have a fault it is that classical orchestral doesnt sound rich/warm.Jazz and pop sound great!

For people with too much free time :), I´ve added the spec sheet translated into English!

Ps I really appreciate everyone´s help and ideas

Many thanks,
Maynardo

The cheapest thing you can do, is to buy a good stereo amplifier and add it to your Denon, what this does is relieve power from the reciever, so it has more power to drive the speakers that are hooked up to the reciever.

So you buy a stereo amp to drive your mains, your mains are now being powered by the stereo amp (would recommend at least 200 wpc stereo, and now the reciever is only driving your center, side surrounds and rear surrounds. Since the surrounds require very little power 90% of the time, this mean that your reciever is doing most of it's work driving your center channel (which is okay since 50-60% of all movie sound is coming through the center channel anyway.

I could also recommend a 3 channel amp to drive the center and mains and let the receiver just drive the surrounds. Stereo amps can be found for very cheap at ebay and audiogon and even pawn shops.
