It actually might be cheaper to have it reconed vs buying a new one. ;) And even cheaper still if all it needs is a new surround.

I just had all the speakers refoamed and the cones are graphite and in good shape no blown speakers but there is a rattle or thud every time the bass thumps that was never there before replaced the foam due to age.

The refoaming was done incompetently. You now have gap rub, because who ever did the job did not center the cones with shims, or used the wrong ones. Or else did not protect the gap, while cleaning the chassis rim, and got debris in the gap. If they managed to get gap rub on two speakers they are grossly incompetent. Please go and get your money back.

Order a refoaming kits and do the job yourself, or have someone competent do the job.

It seems we are surrounded these days in a sea of incompetence.

Thanks TLS I watched him do it and no shims were used just clear plastic sheet.Where do you think is the best place for quality foam kits?

Orange County Speaker would be a good source.

If you are planning to do this yourself, you need -:

Masking tape.

A good supply of razor blades.

Acetone.

Loudspeaker glue.

The correct shims.

The foam surrounds.

New dust caps.

If you are planning to do this, I will go over the procedure with you. It is on several of my posts already, but this has not come up for a while.

Thanks again for your help.I am now not sure what I am going to do,I just put all the speakers back in thier cabinets connected them and both emit-r tweeters came on for a second if that.I tried the emit tweeter out of my center channel on both towers and it works flawless.I dont see any bad contacts on the tweeters either.Maybe time to upgrade I have had them for around 14 years. I just dont know if they are worth it to keep dropping money into them.$150.00 to refoam all speakrs and another ? on 2 tweeters.

I just don't understand how two tweeters blew at once. I would have to be suspicious your amp has developed an ultrasonic oscillation, so be careful. Can you account for how you might have destroyed two tweeters at once?

I don't think those tweeters are available, so it might be the end of the road for those speakers.

Seriously, I have no life.
It can be tricky, but the EMIT diaphragm can be replaced. Orange County may have some in stock. These were sensitive to extreme HF oscillations, like what occurs when an amp clips badly and have seen several that looked like a blown fuse at the point of failure.

If the tweeters came on briefly, look at the crossovers. I have seen crossover caps that blew apart from excessive voltage and they often use caps with a voltage rating that's too close to what they can be exposed to in normal/abnormal use.

The new sound definitely could be from bad alignment. If the dust caps were removed or came off at some point, it's likely that there's something in the gap. It's also possible that the cement holding the spider has let go.

I will look at all the speakers for a closer inspection. All speakers were refoamed 4' mid, 6.5 midbass and 10' woofer in each cabinet.I put them all in and noticed the woofer sounded funny and got some good advice on here last night.I listened to them this morning and knew it was more than just the woofers thier were no highs at all.Thir was nothing coming from the tweeters so I unhooked them and tried my center emit tweeter on both and sounds perfect.I then hooked the old one back up while in my hand I heard it come on for less than a second and the same for the other one. That place you mentioned does have them for $100.00 each.Cant figure out why they would com on for a brief second. What would you use to clean the contacts even though they look fine it might be worth a shot.Back down to the basement I go.

Crossovers work fine because the speakers sound fine when the tweeter from the center channel is used.I just checked again with the old tweeters and one came on for half a second again.

Somehow they must have had an over voltage, and the wire in the back of the membrane must have a break. When you first connect the back EMF makes just enough voltage to spark the gap.

This guy has a fix for it.

Those speakers are only worth fixing now as a DIY project. If you do it you will learn a lot along the way.
