Best Speakers for $2,000: Suggestions?

So far I have purchased a TV and Receiver:

1) 52" SamSung LCD TV 1080P 120HZ LN52A650 - $1899
2) Yamaha Receiver RXV863 - $589

I want to "feel" movies and have perfect sound. We like latin music too. Large speakers are fine. I'm thinking a 5.1 system would be perfect. I'm considering:

A)
Swans Diva 6.1 Towers $849
Swans Diva C3 Center $329
Swans Diva R3 Surround $419
Nsu Research VTF-3 MK3 Subwoofer $699 (I really like the reviews)

or:

B)
EMP EF30T 5.1 Speaker System $1199

Basically, what provides the best value. If you had $2,000, which system will blow people away?

Thank you for helping in advance.

What's important to you?

What are your music listening/movie watching habits? A lot of hours doing both? Only an hour or two .....here and there?

What kind of sound do you like? A foward presentation that is intensely dynamic and in-your-face?

A little more laid back than that?

How big is the room these speakers/system will be in?

What about cabinet finish? Do you want real wood finishes? What color/finishes do you like? Would a nice laminate finish be good enough for you?

The Swan system you mentioned is really nice. I don't think you could go wrong with those.

But I guess a lot depends on your answers to the questions above.

I would suggest you audition several systems and find out what you like...

Throw the Jamo C60 Series into the mix (C 607, C 603, C60 Center Channel ...etc).

Wharfedale Diamond 9 Series, too.

Have you looked at PSB?

Try to audition if you can, the Image Performance Series or the Command Performance Series without their sub. Their subs are good but there are better subs out there for their asking price.

Are you sure that wasn't just a Black Friday deal? It's showing up as $699 for me.

With a budget of $2000 I'd personally start with a solid 2.1 system and add the rest later when funds were available. A good 2.1 system will best an average 5.1 system in my opinion.

YMMV, of course.

Answer

TjMV3,

I really appreciate your help.

What's important to you?
The most important attribute is crystal clear audio while having an impressive bass. I listened to the Bose Acoustimass 10 system. While the sound was very good, the bass was not impressive. I couldn't feel the explosions in the "Battle of Hero" from Star Wars Revenge of the Sith. I would say it's not worth $1199.

What are your music listening/movie watching habits? A lot of hours doing both? Only an hour or two .....here and there?
The system will be used for TV and movies 80% of the time and music (especially Latin) 20%.

What kind of sound do you like? A foward presentation that is intensely dynamic and in-your-face?
For movies, I like load volume and bass. The audio should bounce off my chest. We watch a lot of Fox News .... the center speaker has to be strong.

How big is the room these speakers/system will be in?
The basement area is large 33' x 25' and 9' high. However, the couch is only 15' from the TV.

What about cabinet finish? Do you want real wood finishes? What color/finishes do you like? Would a nice laminate finish be good enough for you?
For cabinet finish, Faux Black Cherry would work best. But honestly, the sound is the most important factor. I'm not nearly as concerned about aesthetics.

Wow! I'm interested.

Nsu Research VTF-3 MK3 Subwoofer $699
or
AV123 MFW-15 $499 (satin black)

I'd love to hear them and put them through a few tests. Which is better?

gopfan, is that $2,000 for just the Left and Right front speakers, or is $2,000 what you can spend on the whole system (fronts, center, rears and sub)?

I'm not so sure you'll be able to buy the Swan 6.1 front speakers for that ($849 ) price. Maybe you can, but I took a look and they're going for $1,159.00 on ..... http://www.theaudioinsider.com/manufacturers.php/mPath/10/sort/2a/page/2

That's a big room you there. I don't think that Yamaha Receiver RXV863 will be able to power your speaker system to the level you desire. Even moreso in a room that size. You may need a Reciver with much more power or maybe even buy yourself a powerful seperate five channel power amp and use your reciever as simply the Pre Amp Processor.

I'm not even sure the sub you want will be able to handle the lower bass frequencies for a room that siz and do it to the level you want. That's a big room. I mean, it probably could. But I have my doubts.

From the type of sound your describing and the kind of dynamics you want, I'm thinking the Swans would be a good match for you.

But also the Polk Audio RTIA9's. The RTIA9's are big speakers and they pack a huge dynamic kick. And they are very crisp and clear. Not the most refined or smooth speakers out there, but they are clear, crisp and pound out a lot of strong, tight bass.

A word of suggestion. You'll get much more bass impact if you place your couch and seats up against the backwall and move your speakers (and system ) out till it's 15 feet from the backwall.

If you're going to be sitting that far from the backwall, you may have some weak bass impact/dynamics. A lot will depend on the room, of course, and I don't know how the room is situated. But I have found that to be the case in a lot of room setups.

Honestly, I really believe you will need more power for your fronts and center channel.

The Jamo speakers I suggested earlier have nice dynamics and punch. But not to the extent you describe. Seems to me you're looking for extreme punch, kick and dynamics. That's not the Jamo speakers. They are not that extreme. Their kick is a little more reserved than that and they are smoother and have a slight warmth to them. They are nicely detailed and clear, though.

Seriously, I believe you have to start thinking about room setup, system/speaker placement and seating placement. As well as maybe continue saving money for a little longer and then get what you're looking for.

You need good size speakers in a room that big and you need some power behind them.

If I were you and looking for that kind of sound and impact, I'd look for speakers with very high sensitivity (at least 91db to higher) and 8 ohm impedance.

Audition some Klipsch or the Energy RC-70's......along with the Polk Audio RTIA9.

I would suggest the Jamo C809, but they're probably just a wee-bit laid back for your tastes. Although they are absolutely killer speakers.

You may also have to dampen that room.........dampen any echo and use bass traps.

I have been using a pair of MB Quart QLS 1030's for almost 9 years and absolutely love them. When I bought them new I paid about $3500 for the pair. I literally listened to 100 different speakers,, basically everything available in the area. I have seen these lately available on the internet for less the $2000 per pair. I have actually considerend buying another pair I like them so much. The build quility is top notch and sound is unbelievable. They can play any music very well and do excellent with movies.
