hi im setting up a 5.1 system and am due to space limitations thinking id love to put the subwoofer rear middle, or behind the couch id be sitting in, is that a good idea or will it mess with the sound?

It depends on where the crossover is; if it's higher than about 100 - 120Hz, then it will be an issue. If not, behind your couch could be a wonderful idea.

Actually, as long as it's inline with you, 100Hz crossovers should be fine. If it's over to one side, it will become localized.

And Middle isn't the only spot you can put a subwoofer. Subwoofers have no set locations. There home is room and subwoofer dependent, so you must explore and try out spots until it sounds right to you.

That’s exactly were I have mine and it works great. When I did the “sub crawl” back-middle turned out to be the best location. I’ve played with crossovers as high as 100Hz and as Sheep says no localization issues. Just make sure to give the driver and port(s) a few inches to breath.
