PSB 5i bit the biscuit, time for a new sub ;(

Last night I learned that my PSB 5i has bit the biscuit, it popped a fuse and after replacing the fuse it blew that one as well. It appears as though I'd need a new AMP, and I'm not sure its worth it :(

Does anyone have any recommendations for a similar setup, I have a set of Image 5T's that accompany it. I'd like something in the same price range, not sure I'd go PSB again as I've heard this is not uncommon in that line.

Thanks!

Why don't you just replace the amp with a Bash, amp? It will be a lot cheaper.

Ok, where can I get one? I thought you had to get it from PSB due to some special circuitry they used? I assume it's the power supply that's shot, which I'm guessing is part of the amp board.

Disconnect one of the speaker wires and put another fuse into it. You may have a shorted voice coil and if the amp sees that, it pukes the fuse. The speaker can be reconed. If disconnecting it doesn't do anything for you, unplug it and open the amp. Look for the number on the output transistors and google the brand and part number. MCM should have them and if they don't, PSN may have a program for servicing out of warranty equipment. If you like the sub, there's really no reason to toss it just because of a $10 part. OK, it might be more but at least dig for some info as far as why it's not working.

Parts Express sells quite a few different amp modules and Madisound sells some, too. I would still check the original out to see what caused the problem. A local stereo shop that services should be able to help, too.

Tried that , fuse still popped. I looked at the board, nothing looks burnt or blown. Any other ideas? I'm a software guy not a electronics nut :)

I'd call PSB on Monday. I haven't dealt with them but they may be helpful.

Can you remove the amp and open it, then post some photos?

This will likely be a class D amp. The output devices will be gated switching MOSFETS. Don't assume the problem will end with the output devices. There are a number of problems that can drive these amps into ultrasonic oscillation and take down the amp.

The switching power supplies are also a potent source of problems.
