Metallica Fans Upset Over “Death Magnetic” Compression

So compressioin is not really clipping off the highs and lows, but just expanding the sound across the range? I'll read that link you gave me Andrew.

I'm not good at guitar at all. I always wanted to play but never took the time until several years ago when I met a guy who played real well. I said, "It'll take a year before I can even play anything." He looked at me and said, "Well... a year will go by anyway. A year from now, would like to be able play something or still just sit their and wish you could." I went to SamAsh and bought two guitars that day.

I knew very little and just picked out he electric that looked really good and felt really good. I had never heard of PRS before, so I was actually tihnking I was buying an off brand. I was pretty ignorant at time. But I liked it so much and I figured that I'd want to pick it up everyday just because I thought it was so cool and that helped me stick to it a bit.

It seems that when I crank up the compression on my effects rig, my playing definately sounds better.... maybe because it masks the mistakes better?

LOL!:D

He's sure nobody here has a clue...
Ive been doing field recordings since the early eighties and have always had a fondness for "well" recorded music. Most of the artist that allow audience recordings and allow SBD patches care greatly about the product they put out, as a result they end up being heavily involved in the studio mixes, resulting in some excellent work.

examples

Phish: Billy Breaths
David Grissman: Dawgwood
Mike Gordon-Leo Kottke: Clone
David Chesky: pretty much anything he touches
Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense

Someone on the intarwebs described Lars' reaction as sticking his fingers in his ears and going "la la la". :D

I never cared for putting compression on my guitar, it makes the mistakes more noticeable.

The interesting thing is that because solid state amps now days are so good/nuetral, most electric guitar amplifiers go out of their way to induce distortions and colorations because the body isn't really reasonating enough to give guitars enough of a "sound..."
