How do I get HDTV on my projector !!!!

OK, I have the basic cable with no cable boxes. Its now big deal because both of my plasma's pick up the HD channels so I didnt want to pay the extra just to have a box. I have been using a older NEC projector in a designated theater room, and a cheap DVD/VCR combo to watch tv, usually only for big games and what not. Now my new projector is on the way ( JVC RS1 ) and I want to have the same HD channels, as I do on my Plasma"s. I know the plasma's have a built in HD tuner. So is there any kind of External one I can run coax into, and HDMI or RBG out to get at least 720 to 1080?
Also I used my neighbors cable box, and it worked pretty well. I could only get 480i out of it, but it looked alot better. Than I bought a cable box off of Ebay and all channels said (to be announced ). It may sound cheap but I would rather not pay an extra $70 to $80 a month just to get TV on my projector. Anyone have some ideas? Thanks.

You are stuck, because your TVs re not allowed to output an HD signal, because of HDCP/DRM issues. RGB will not be high def. You will have to get a cable box, or HD DVR that has an HDMI output. For new consumer products, HD Has to output via HDMI, all analog inputs must downgrade to 480i.

Just to clarify (or muddy, depending) the issue.

http://www.barrel-of-monkeys.com/graphics/prod/tvtuners/205dct.shtml?gclid=CJ_2noK2_JYCFQMQswodrkXnZQ

You can sometimes access local hd chanels through basic, and a qam tuner like the one above, it also has an atsc tuner for OTA broadcast.
Not all OTA (ATSC) tuners are HD tuners. Most aren't. You won't get HD from one of those $50 coupon digital TV tuners. The few OTA HD tuners I've seen cost around $200 or so, just like this one.

If, as he says, he can access HD over the cable company's feed, then a stand-alone QAM tuner that's capable of HD will suffice, but I've never seen an animal like that.

FWIW, it does seem that the tuner Bandphan linked to will pass HD (up to 1080i, all you need) via component video.

^^very true, all that I have access to are of the HD variety. Cheap solutons would be to pick up an old VOOM receiver on ebay for $20 to do OTA HD. With comcast and a qam, atsc tuner, the locals are not encrypted and are open access on chanels 87.xxx and the music chanels on 91.xxx.

Thank you, I checked out that box, but no HDMI port. I found a hdtv tuner by LG on Ebay, Do you think this would work for me? http://electronics.shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmptZTelevisions?_nkw=LG+hdtv+tuner&_sacat=293&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=hdtv+tuner&_osacat=293
I wish I could find a local store that sold It so I can test it and if it does not work, bring it back. Let me know what you think. Thanks.
I would ask your cable Co. Your cable companies will do everything they can to stop these devices working. The device no longer works for the seller, so I would be careful.

I'm not sure where you can pick up a HD ATSC tuner with cable capabilities, but you can sometimes find over the air TV tuners on eBay which do delivery HD channels. I do know that there are $200 or so ATSC HD tuners, which may not fit your budget, but the older DirecTV receivers that are now outdated have internal tuners for over-the-air broadcasts that you can hook up to an antenna without issue.

http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-SAT-HD200-DIRECTV-HDTV-SATELLITE-RECEIVER_W0QQitemZ180305841892QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

That one will receive over the air broadcasts and output them over component or digital.

Read the questions. He states clearly that it no longer works for him. If you want over the air, I have a couple of Direct TV Tivo units form before Direct TV fell out of bed with them. I can send one your way if an over air signal will work. I think however if you want cable you will have to bleed a bit more to your cable company. I would bet that will be your only solution unless you want to limit your self to off air.

QAM tuner

These are available. I have one called PHD 205. www.epvision.com/ I paid about $140 for it. It does not have HDMI, but it does have DVI with HDCP and component. That is all you need for the projector. I have been using it for about a year. The only feature that I would like to have is DVR and programing capabilities, but I am not willing to pay $30 or $40 extra a month to the cable company to get that. Especially since my parents spend the winters in Florida and I borrow their dual tuner hi def box. when they are gone.:D

In my area I am able to pick up about 70 digital channels, 40 of them are music and 20 of them are garbage. I do get all of the major networks in high def just like I do with my TV. For me this was the way to go.

Thanks and good luck, the one I linked doesnt have hdmi, but does rgb, component. Just out of curiosity, why is hdmi so important to your projector?
