Last receiver question ...

Ok some I thought I narrowed it down and decided on getting the Onkyo TX-SR705. A bunch of places are blowing them out and I could get one for around $450. (one thing kind of scaring me, are the reports that they run hot, should I even worry about that?)

I was about to order one, when someone on here suggested the Denon 2808CI. It's a bit more expensive. The I looked at the Denon 2308CI, which I could probably get for about the same as the Onkyo (maybe a bit less).

So for 50-50 music/ movie use what would your choice be?

Onkyo 705 (~$450)

or

Denon 2308CI (~$450)

(Also in the unlikely event that I found an open box, etc. Denon 2808CI for around $500, would you drop the above choice for the more expensive 2808CI)?

i dont know to much about the denon's but as for the onkyo heat up issue, just give it some room, be reasonable it will be fine, the issue (NOTE NOT A PROBLEM, JUST A ISSUE)is just overblown by some people. which ever receiver you cave in and dont give space to will overheat and be hot enough to fry some eggs.

and sorry i can t really tell you which reciver to get. the only thing i will say is that i am verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry pleased with my onkyo.

Welcome to the forum....as you mentioned at the end of your post, is you can get the extra $150 you can get the 2808ci for $598 delivered trough 6ave Electronics or J & R will match that price as well....

It is the best bet for your money right now. Now given that is not an option, it just depends on your needs really. If you must have more power for more difficult speaker loads--then go with the Onkyo. In my opinion, that would be the only reason to go with the Onkyo. I would favor the Denon over it, but then again I am biased in that regard...

I'm only going to run a pair of bookshelf speakers (Infinity Primus P162, or maybe if I can swing it Energy C-200), a center channel speaker, and maybe a sub. (in the future we might fill out the system with surrounds).

I don't think the 5 watts/channel will make that much of a difference.

I used to think that the lack of preouts is a show stopper but not any more. The fact is, when you are ready for speaker upgrades and want more power, you probably won't be happy with using any <$1,000 receiver as prepro. In the end most of us will probably sell the low end receiver, pass it on to their children, or retire it to a smaller room setup.

Going with the Denon and you will be more likely to have a trouble free receiver and enjoy your music. Onkyo sounds great too but the wonderful thing about Denon is that you don't get fatigue even after listening to it for hours as long you have some decent speakers connected to it. Believe it or not, that applies to even my 22 lbs 1705.

I'd go with the Denon myself as they're generally pretty problem-free and like Onkyo, they generally hit their stated specs. You can get a Denon 1909 for about $350 shipped right now using eBay and Live.com. The 1909 is newer than both the 705 and 2308.

It wouldn't hurt to call 6th ave, and tell them you didn't mean to miss the sale, you were researching that specific receiver to see if it would meet your needs. By the time you decided to get it, you had missed the sale. They may give you the deal.
