I was about to order a Onkyo 705, when I stopped by a local store. They have one Pioneer Elite VSX-90TXV. It is a display model and he would sell it to me for $350. What do you think? Is this a better AVR than the Onkyo?

I know it does not have a phone input, but if it is a much better AVR I could buy a seperate phono amp.

What would you do?

I would get the Pioneer myself. I just don't really like Onkyo. They are a great company but everyone has their opinion you know...I don't own a Pioneer but I have owned a Onkyo before and never had any issues with it at all. I have heard many stories about overheating with the Onkyo's but I myself never had a problem....

I'm a fan of Pioneer Elite, but whether or not it is "better" will depend on what features you want.

For example, the VSX-90TXV will not process audio over HDMI - it will only pass the audio on to another device. The Onkyo 705, on the other hand, does process audio over HDMI. I would want a receiver that could process HDMI audio (so I would choose that Onkyo over that Pioneer), but it's not important to everyone.

Have you looked at this year's crop of receivers? They get better and cheaper every year, and older display models aren't always the best deal.

If u look hard you can find the 92 Pioneer for 599 or slightly less. The 91 for that same price.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm not going to get the Pioneer, wasn't aware that it didn't pass audio through the HDMI cable, and I would have to set up a digital audio cable in addition to the HDMI.

Guess I'm back to the Onkoyo 705. (Just a little worried about the "overheating" some people talk about).

Just to clarify - the Pioneer does pass audio over HDMI, it just doesn't process it. So, it would pass the audio onto your TV, but it wouldn't play it over the speakers connected to the Pioneer.

That's what I meant to say.

I like Onkyo 705 better

Even at $449.97 ( $100 more) the Onkyo 705 is a much better buy

I have had a pioneer and currently own a onkyo 806 and i would go for the onkyo. the pioneer does not even have hd audio and thx is soo over rated. plus the pioneer is rated at 0.09thd which is worse then the onkyo and the onkyo has Faroudja DCDi video processing which is really good, you can always get better but this processor is better then the pioneer 1, and the onkyo has Audyssey, thats another plus.

my pick: Onkyo. and dont worry about the heating just give it some room and it will be fine, be reasonable with the room, if you put ANY receiver in a tight place it will heat up, think about it. some people like to blow up some small issues into big ones.
