Watched my first blu-ray at home...

I got everything hooked up and set properly and slid in my first purchase... Iron Man. I have this on DVD too, so i thought I'd be able to do some good comparisons. It was nice to see the Dolby TrueHD display on the 94... I got chills. :D Here are some my impressions and thoughts which might help others who haven't made the jump.

I put the DVD version in my Oppo and thought I play a bit. I have to say there were some surprises. One the picture looked fantastic, but I didn't have that "holy crap" moment I thought would. I thought about it and came to two conclusions: 1) I just think I'm getting used to hi-def. I've seen other bd setups and watch HD at home, so I don't think the improvement is leaps and bounds anymore. I'm just more used to and expecting the quality level. 2) I think my TV is partly to blame. I love my TV and it has a great picture, but I think it lacks the in your face punch of a good plasma or LCD. I've seen Iron Man on last year's model Elite Kuro and it's certainly looked much better... then again, his tv was $6K mine was $2K. Don't get me wrong though, the picture was absolutely stunning... I guess you're just always hoping for more.

I tried to sync the two players with the Oppo a bit behind. I switched back and forth to watch the same scenes. It took a few seconds to lock in each input, but it was close enough where you could really do some nice comparisons. I was for sure that I would not notice any difference betweeen the surround formats, but that's were I was wrong. I thought dialogue sounded just a tad bit better on the DVD, but I think there's been some other complaints about the bd version so I didn't put too much into that. The opening scene where they first get attacked was really impressive. The there was definately something different about the surrounds, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I didn't really hear more, nor was it louder, it was just different. I liked it more. Then it sorda came to me. There seemed to be a lot more "movement" in the sound. I know that sounds silly, but bullets had more of a defined localized effect on the DVD where they sound seemed to travel or pan much more realistically on the BD. I played several other scenes where I thought I might notice that and it seemed accurate each time.

For $200, I think the BD350 was easily one of the best value additions I've ever made to any system. To the dismay of family, I watched the disc until about 10:30 am replaying scenes and explosions and what not. Oh and that's the other thing... bass was much different on the BD version. Explosions had more THUMP and ThUNK to them. It was very noticable.

Anyway, if you're on the fence about blu-ray, I'd definately take the leap.

Great write-up chris - I'm not so much "on-the-fence" about Blu-ray, just waiting for X-mas to get one from Santa! :) Before it was..."Wait until the format war is over", and "I guess I should get a good TV", to "it's time to do this" :D

Iron Man was an excellent movie on SD DVD as far as I'm concerned - it might have been a more dramatic comparison to throw in an older disc that has also been released on Blu-ray? Just a thought. I thought the audio on the SD version was fantastic in of itself - and my receiver doesn't decode Dolby TrueHD unfortunately, so I'll be stuck with plain on DD or DTS, depending. :( Here is where I didn't "future-proof" my setup, nor does it have HDMI switching capability, so things will likely end up being somewhat of a mess for a while until I can upgrade the AVR. :)

Still, thanks for the post - makes me that much more impatient to get mine! :D

I watched this on blu ray only, haven't seen it on regular dvd yet, but I was very impressed by both the audio and picture quality. Glad to see that you could tell a difference in sound between the two versions, but are you sure both were level matched? Some people associate louder with better, but I don't doubt you when you say that there was more "movement" in the sound on the blu ray version.

Anyway, congrats on stepping up to blu ray, you will also enjoy other quality flicks on blu ray such as Live Free Or Die Hard, and Ratatouille, both have reference quality audio and video, and don't forget to also check out Transformers.

I compared the SD DVD of Corpse Bride back to back with the BD and I was blown away. Some other movies not so much, but movies that I have seen a few times, I can tell right away when the PQ is better. I know what you are talking about with the audio, but I do hear a noticeable improvement with the better BD tracks.

Thanks very much for the review! Nicely done. I've been very impressed with the s550 in my set-up. Iron Man BD was my first blu-ray disc experience too! True-HD (wide range setting) is out of this world. It blows the SD dvd out of the water IMO.

The sound was just different. At first I thought it was just pure volume, but it was more than that. I mean it wasn't night and day, but I would say the difference on some scenes was equal to the difference between ProLogic and DD on certain effects.

It was pretty cool. The opening dialogue when they were in the HumVee sounded a bit odd. I almost thought that my center channel was distorting or blown or hooked up out of phase when I redid everything, but I think that's just how it sounds. The rest though was intense. I'm a believer.

I think the lack of that "punch" factor with the picture is just a product of the the DLP RPTV technology. It makes a really bright beautiful picture and the blacks are surprisingly good on my set. I wouldn't describe them as inky black, but they don't wash out to that gray-ish hue you can have with a lot of flat screens. It seems that until you start getting into the $4K+ range, blacks are the weak link to most any tv.

One other thing I forgot to mention... the load times. I keep hearing about how long it takes. I didn't time it, but the player cranked right up and I'd say the disc took about 30 seconds to load... probably less. By the time I got back to the couch and was able to get situated, the main menu came up.

Hell that's not much longer than my old Phillips SD DVD player. :)

HA! I was waiting for someone to hit me over the head with their PS3... not surprising it's you! :D

I can live with 30 seconds... hell... even 60. By the time I get back to the couch, get all nestled in with my scooby snacks and drink at the appropriate reach angle, the movie's already going.

I counted 27 seconds (using the blinking light on my cable box) from the blue screen until the Paramount opening screen comes up. That's pretty fast IMO

That is why I got it, and I bought COD4 and it was over :D.

Honestly though, the ps3 is nice, and I use it as a media center for streaming all my cd's etc. Remote support and odd form factor are definite downsides, but I still feel it the absolute best $400 I have spent on my system.

Ok, testimonial over, not derailing thread :p

Well croseiv, my Mom had to be put back into the hospital. :(:( She just got out yesterday and things have been very hectic. Hope to get to over the weekend. As always, have to work first. I admit though, it is tough seeing them still boxed up.

Cheers,

Phil

Hello Chris. I figured you would like that movie. Maybe you and I can direct it.:eek: Anyways, you must have me mixed up because I have never owned an Integra. I had a Yammie 663, but now have a new Denon 2808 CI. But, I would not be upset if I did own an Integra. ;);)

Cheers,

Phil
