So I have had my new DVD-3910 for a few weeks now and love this player, but I need help on something as I when I try to listen to a CD I am getting no sound from my sub channel....

I cannot figure this one out.....I have the 3910 hooked up to my AVR-3808ci VIA hdmi and when I watch movies the 3808 says Multi Channel In and I get sound on the LFE but not with normal audio CDS....I also wanted to know how to get the 3808 to do the decoding as I am not sure if it worth having the 3910 doing it....

Does this having something to do with PCM vs. Bitstream as I want the AVR-3808 to do all of the decoding and possibly that way I will get the sub on CDs and then the receiver will also read out DD, DTS, or what have you while I am watching movies....???

Thanks for your help....

I think you are on the right track thinking it is the PCM vs Bitstream. The PCM feed will likely be stereo only, and that may trigger the receiver to not perform bass management for that signal; I don't have one so I can't say for sure.

You would have to use the Denon Link if you want the receiver to decode and use component video input for video.

I think it would be better to have the 3910 to do all of the decoding. I have a 3808ci and I have read that the 3808ci is not that good at decoding

im also looking for a denon dvd player I have looked at the 3910 and the 2930ci and I think Im going to go with the 2930ci or if I can get a good deal on a used 3930ci

Interesting...thanks for the info as I have not heard that of the 3808ci. I am not sure if I will even be able to work it out, I just really wanted to be able to use my Ultra when listening to music especially being a classical musician I have alot of killer orchestral stuff and organ recordings that I am not being able to take advantage of the subwoofer on...

I was in the same boat as you with the players but I lucked out and got a brand new 3910 for $297 so I couldn't turn that down the price was too good. As for the 3930ci, check out audiogon...I nearly bought one from a dealer that has a demo unit that only had like 20 hours on the laser and they were selling it for $659 with warranty...

Why won't you use the Denon Link? For classical music I prefer pure direct using analog hook ups but you can always choose Stereo or Direct and have the sub turned on as well.

By the way, I should be the one to say ouch... I paid $1,600 for my 3910. You have got yourself a super deal.

Peng, the only reason is from what I understand I will have to manually switch back and forth between the Denon Link and the HDMI connection which is what I wanted to avoid. Now would it be possibly to hook the Denon Link up and assign it to the CD input and leave the HDMI connected for DVD....will the 3910 output to both or does that again run into a switching issue....I was looking for a simply leave it connected and don't mess with it solution....but perhaps that is not possibl....what about using a COAX digital for CDs???

And you win on the ouch debate....I did indeed get a super deal on the unit....but I appreciate your help as a fellow 3910 owner...

Actually I think you could just set the HDMI audio to 2.0 and set Denon Link to ON for all the audio decoding like DSD-direct, DVD-A, DD, & DTS. So the HDMI would basically be for Video and the D-Link would be for Audio.

This is too funny, it is as though I wanted to win the ouch debate. Unfortunately you are right about the nuissance of having to switch between HDMI and Dlink back and forth.

However, there should be no problem using the coax and analog out for CD and have the subwoofer on as long as you avoid the pure direct mode.

Why not just HDMI-1.1 for Picture & Denon Link 3rd for Digital Audio (DSD-SACD/DVD-A/DD/DTS/CD)?

If you set HDMI Audio to 2Ch, instead of Normal (bitstream) or MCh (PCM), then the digital audio will be output to the D-Link-3rd.

Can you configure the Receiver to have HDMI for Video Source and D-Link for Audio Source? Is that possible?

In the manual of the 5308CI, it says:

"To play the video signal assigned at HDMI combined with the audio signal assigned at DIGITAL, select DIGITAL at the GUI menu SOURCE SELECT - Input Mode".

So you can configure the receiver to play video via HDMI and audio via D-Link (Digital).

This way, you can get DSD-Direct SACD, DVD-A, DTS, DD, & Stereo CD sound via the D-Link cable.

I use nothing but D-Link for all audio, and my LFE performance is pefect on regular CDs as well as SACD & DVD-A. HDMI is used for all video. I understand Denon has done away with D-Link on their new models, but I've always been under the impression that it's the most pristine way to transfer digital audio, since it remains digital until the final D/A converters.

Yeah, I am going to have to go to my storage unit and dig out the D-link cable and try this out and if it works that will be great. The reason I am not getting the sub working on CDs must be that the 3910 is sending the audio via PCM and not bitstream beacause even when listening to CD the display on the 3808ci still says "Multi-Channel In' just as it does when watching DVDs....

So, assuming I can assign the D-link to the DVD input on the 3808ci then all should be well....

Oh...and Geno...LOVE the final line under your signature....:p

I have done that myself, but it does not seem like Chopin wants to switch back and forth so I assume whenever he watch movies he wants to use HDMI instead of CV.

I hope your 3910 was one of those made later than earlier. I had to do a firmware update to get Dlink vers 3. That was the annoying part because it never make sense to me that after paying more for it than my 3805 I have to flash the 3910 yet the 3805 was in the market at around the same time may be even earlier but was Dlink ver.3 ready.

Hello gentlmen....A little bit of a delayed update on this thread. I was holding off on yanking everything away from the wall to mess with the D-link as I purchased a new cabinet and just firgured I would mess with it while moving everything to its new home...

In any event, I messed around with everything last night before putting the Anchorman DVD. I did the digital input assign on the DVD input on the 3808ci to the D-link and activated the D-link on the 3910....Result?? The 3808 finally read out Dolby Digital instead of 'multi channel in' and was running everything fine through the D-link....

I am anxious to get home this evening (stuck in rehearsals all day :() and try out some audio and hopefully I will be getting the audio processing in the 3808ci and hence the subwoofer w/audio as well. Thank you all again for the help....

Yeah, I am hooking D-Link (Audio) and HDMI (Video) from 3930CI to receiver.

Is your 3910 updated with the firmware for the D-Link 3rd Edition?

You know Acu I have no idea....in the menu I could select 2nd or 3rd in the D-link menu so I selected 3rd. I assume that means I have the update. Just got home and I will have to throw something in so I can see if all is working well...
