Monster THX speakers

Anyone know anything at all about these speakers? They look a lot like B and W's including the kevlar cones. My son said he thought B&W made them for Monster but I can't get any confirmation on that. I had been in the market for my first HD large screen TV and Blueray player. In doing my research I discovered that my 25 year old NEC analog surround A/V receiver and PSB speakers and subwoofer(passive) also over 25 yrs old could not be used for 5.1 surround as I would never be able to find a center channel that would match timbre. (As you can see I had not been keeping up with the vast changes in the stereo and surround sound world since my initial purchase over 25 years ago) So I decided that even though my system still sounded great, after over 25 years I owed myself a major upgrade. As much as I loved my PSB's, replacing them with new PSB's, even the mid line Image series was way over my budget. After extensive research and going blind reading reviews I decided on the following wish list: Panasonic TH-50PZ800 HD TV, Panasonic DMP-BD35 Blueray, Onkyo TX-SR806 AV receiver, Axiom Epic 60-350 5.1 surround HT speaker system. I live in Canada, and there just aren't that many stereo specialty stores in my area. The above wish list would have meant getting the TV from a local Future Shop, Driving 45 miles to the closest 2001 Audio Video chain (Canadian disributor for Onkyo). I had also made arrangements to drive 5 hours to the Axiom factory to audition the Axiom speakers. Which would have also saved me 8% off the price of the speakers if I took them home with me since they would not have had to ship them. Just before I took the shopping plunge my son told me about a stereo, home theatre specialty store in Hamilton ON (only a 35 minute drive away) that I should check out first. I took his advice. Wow, glad I did!!! This place was great. Has been in business for over 70 years. Found the Panny TV for $500 bucks cheaper than Future Shop and the Blueray player at a $40 savings. I also saw this display for Monster THX Select speaker system for almost $1000 less than the Axioms would have cost me. The store had the speakers set up in their very large dedicated home theatre room. They literaly blew me away. This same store aslo sells Paradigme, and I really liked the sound of the Monster speakers much better, and they were quite a bit less expensive, and are THX certified. I was shocked, as I had no clue that Monster even made speakers. These particular speakers were on special if purchased as a set. Two 4 ohm THX SL200 towers, A THX SL200 center, two THX SL100 dipole surrounds, and a THX SL200 sub. Now, not only do these speakers sound great...they look amazing. Real cherry wood veneer. (The Azioms for $1000 more were vinyl). So even though I had never heard of these speakers I bought them and the TV and Bluray player. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse and then even threw in free delivery (35 miles). So I only had to make one more stop for my Onkyo 806.

I have now had this system up and running for almost 3 weeks. It is still blowing me away. My room is not small, 25 feet by 13 feet, and these speakers rattle the house when watching a blueray movie. I actually spend more time listening to music than watching movies. These speakers sound just great in two channel stereo. The imaging is even better than my old PSB's. The bass is crisp and fast. They sound equally good with rock, jazz, easy listening and classical. I was initially leary about these speakers because of the low price, but the longer I listen to them the more I like them. I'd really be interested to hear from anyone else that may own or has listened to these speakers. I'd also love to know if thses things are made by Monster or if they are actually made by B&W. Thanks in advance.

For the money you can get far better sounding speakers at far less a price tag. I have heard their speakers and although just okay for me, their subs are horrible in comparsion to the SVS or Hsu brands. I mean alot of distortion in the lower frequencies. Sure they look nice but at what they are charging, I would give up looks for better sound.

I really like the Paradigm 20's, AV123 speakers (except the Onix bookshelves just don't care for those) Definitive Technology (prefer the BP over the Mythos ST line). Speakers are an individual choice, so go with what sounds great to you but a price you can live with. Monster has always been about profit and false advertising, something to keep in mind. And don't put too much validity in THX certification.

I've not heard Monster speakers, but most people around here won't buy Monster products on principle. They are a horrible company that markets average cables at extreme prices, and they sue any and all companies with the word "monster" in their name.

Find anything else.

B&W has NOTHING to do with monster. It is almost hard for me to mention them in the same sentence.. Alot of companies are using Kevlar for their speaker surrounds...As in IE:using the B&W look to gain customers...I am glad you are enjoying your speakers..........I hate Noel Lee.:)

By the way I am interested in how you decided on buying these. If you don't mind me asking I am wondering how you heard of monsterand what helped guide you to your desicion? Did you listen to anything else? There are some great speaker companies in Canada....

I am surprised at this given the research you did... so you read about all these various components and then bought speakers at a shop the first time you heard them (and heard OF them)? Wow, sounds like an impulse buy to me.

I don't have the ravenous hatred of Monster that others here have - hey if they can get $150 for a 25 foot HDMI good for them - but I'm really amazed that you'd be looking at top speaker companies and then buy speakers you've never heard of...

But, hey, if you like them who cares?

I saw the speaker set up you own at a customer's house a while back. I didn't sit and do critical listening, but the lady turned on the receiver for some music in surround mix and it sounded great. The build quality was there, too. Solid binding posts, beautifull veneer...........
Not sure why anyone'd want to trash this guy's rig, but I've heard the speaks and they are just fine. As for Monster, meh, yeah they sue people, but in the big scheme of things to worry about I look elsewhere............

Enjoy your setup, buddy! Welcome to the 21st Century!

I haven't kept tabs on Monster and didn't know about the lawsuit stuff. I'll take a look. I'm sure that they are protecting their brand image (which, after all, is clearly an advantage to them since they can charge higher prices for the same stuff based on the branding) but if they are as bad as everyone here believes with that kind of stuff then I'll have to jump aboard the bandwagon too. Does anyone have any resources on this topic you can point me to?

Thanks... I read a few of them. I don't know enough about cable connectors to comment on the Blue Jeans Cable lawsuit, but the Monster Mini-Golf one is interesting. Interesting in that I actually thought that Monster Mini-Golf is infringing MORE on the name/brand/logo of Monster Energy Drink than Monster cable. When I saw the Monster Mini-golf logo I thought..."I've seen that before" and thought perhaps it was Monster Cable's logo, but they look NOTHING alike. BUT, it looks VERY much like the Monster Energy Drink logo.

Yeah, that seems entirely frivilous. At least the Blue Jean Cable lawsuit was related to their business.

Regardless of the quality of their products, nobody should buy anything from Monster. They are an evil company. Their latest insane lawsuit is against a miniature golf course, of all things!!:mad:

How I Decided

Jamie, I had never heard of Monster speakers. What helped me decide on this purchase was actually listening to them. I spent at least an hour listening to both HD movies and several CD's. At the same store where I made the purchase I also listened to Paradigme monitor 11's.(around $3000 for 2 towers, center, 2 surrounds and a sub) The sound from the monsters were much better. As I mentioned in my original post my first choice would have been PSB's. Unfortunately, their mid line Image series, with the 55 towers would have been around $3500. The Axiom's would have set me back $2800. Both of the above are vinyl covered. The full set of Monster's cost me $1899. They are very solid and well built. And like I said they sounded very good.

Gosh, this almost sounds like a spammer getting the word out on Monster Speakers.

$1900 for Monster Speakers?

No, not a spammer. And yes $1899 was the full price for the 6 speakers. That price had a lot to do with my final choice. After I listened to them and returned home I searched the net for a review. I could only find one. I found it at ecoustics . com It was a review by Brian Kahn in Audio Video Revolution in November of 2006. According to his review my system costed out at $3600 US, so I immediately decided that since I liked the sound of them anyway 1900 canadian was a steal.
