96kHz/ 24Bit Audio DVD Anybody?

....Not to be confused with DVD-Audio, of course.

Okay, so ParadigmDawg has his 6,000:p WAV files playing through his new AVR-3808CI. These WAV music files are Uncompressed 44kHz/16Bit.

So I was thinking how I could better that in terms of "quality" vs. "quantity".:D

So I used a Audio-DVD Writing software and converted 50 songs from CDs to a DVD-R disc. These songs are now Uncompressed PCM 2Ch 96kHz/24Bit.:D

So there.:p

I already tried an experiment like that where I up sampled the wave files, and didn't notice any audible difference in a a/b comparison. In my opinion up sampling audio doesn't yield the same benefits as up sampling video.

How'd it sound?
Yeah, like Sparky says, I couldn't tell the difference either.

Heck, I can't even tell the difference between a WMA file (compressed & NOT Lossless) and a WAV file (uncompressed & Lossless).

Just like I can't tell the difference between DSD-Direct vs DSD-PCM vs CD (2Ch vs 2Ch).

Just like I can't tell the difference between TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, & PCM vs DD & DTS when the volume is level-matched.

But darn it, I just FEEL much BETTER anyway.:D:D

And that's what really counts.:D

I was running my audio directly off my HTPC a few months ago. Had Thriller in 24bit, Brothers in Arms in 24bit, and a couple Peter Gabriel CDs in 24bit. I A/B'd them all against the 16bit cds and couldn't hear a difference at all. And I even wanted to. Same goes for my car setup which, quite honeslty, is even better than some of the store demo rooms I've heard.

FWIW, I also have a hard time distinguishing the difference between wav and 320kbps. If the system I'm demo'ing on doesn't have some dynamic headroom, it's usually a bust for me.

That's actually one of the main reasons I'm looking at going with a receiver that has over 200w per channel. A lot of the locals 'audiophiles' don't seem to understand this. *shrugs*

Acudeftechguy is becoming an objectivist!D) I think it's FMW whose done a ton of tests on this..........and sold all his hi end stuff and listens to 320 mp3s. Davemcc and I both own escient fireballs which play 320 files. I haven't been able to hear the diff from cds. I did want to buy an AudioRequest Server for lossless but couldn't swing the cash......I think Linn has a server that does hi res 96kHz/ 24Bit......but at 12k or whatever it was I am happy with my little 320 files on hand.

But I am down with that 200w..........I just bought a yammie 663 and will preout to my Parasound HCA 200x3.

There is a difference but only by measuring. You cannot hear any audible difference between 24 and 16 bit. However there is a huge difference between compressed and uncompressed files.....As you all know already...kinda like preaching to the choir.......:D
When I send a disc out to be mastered I burn a 24 bit copy for the Mastering engineer only. These will not play in a regular cd player......I can tell the difference between my 16 bit and 24 bit mixes really only by wave form visuals. No audible difference to me at all.

It depends on the source material. Most new release CD's are crap in terms of dynamics. Some DVD-A's are reported to be lacking as well.

I didn't know SD DVD could support PCM of 96/24--even two channel. I figured it could only do 48/16 max. (Shows you what I know. I didn't bother doing the math. I just assumed.)

MP3's still sound flat to me. However, I am talking about 128's, 192's and the occasional 256. I haven't a/b'd a 320 with a good recording. I pretty much moved onto lossless wma for that kind of stuff.

One interesting thing about these new Denon receivers (3808, 4808, 5308) is the ability to play music files (uncompressed) directly from a USB device (hard drives). So you just hook up your portable hard drive to the USB port on the back of the receiver and play directly.

I was thinking of storing my CDs on a portable Hard Drive as 96kHz/24Bit and just hook the Hard Drive to the Denon 5308's USB port and play from there.

is there a screen for navigating these files or are you doing it 'blind'?

According to the manual, I believe it even shows you the Album Art that goes along with each CD.

When I Rip a CD, it automatically goes into a Folder with the Artist Name and CD Title and Song titles.

You would need to turn on your Display, which would then show you the name of the song, etc. When you hit "Enter" on your remote, it should play that song.
