My XBOX360 Broken Again!

I seem to be the unfortunate one of the 33% of people whom own unreliable Xbox360's. I've sent mine in for repair last year because it would continually freeze up. Even after they repaired it, the image would float at times and then distort while only a power cycle would resolve it.

Now its doing the same thing, blocking then freezing up within minutes of me powering it on.

Last time I spoke with uSoft they said the 3 year extended warranty only applies to the Red Ring issue. So should I BS and tell them that is my issue or just send it in and eat the repair cost? Anyone else experience these issues?

I will never buy another uSoft gaming system again

Sell it, by a PS3.

I don't do this very often but I completely agree with SheepStar.:p

Just to expound on this a bit. During my last trip to the sandbox we had four Xbox 360 give up the ghost in a six month period. Three of us had PS3, never had a problem with any of them.

We actually left the plastics off of one 360 after a thorough cleaning when it wouldn't read any disk's. It worked the longest and only occasionally required some gentle tapping on the disk drive to get it to work before the RROD.

Look at the bright side...more time to spend on here! :D

Seriously, though, sorry about your issue. I've stayed away from the Xbox 360s because of all these problems. My only thought on what you should tell them is...do whatever will let you sleep at night. In my impression, you are a man of high principles. You can't buy those for the cost of the repair, but you can lose them over it - even if you are the only one that knows it.

Sorry to hear about that Gene. My first xbox 360 suffered from freezing issues before it showed the RROD. The RROD might be right around the corner. BTW I had a new/refurbished one in my hands in less than a week.

I have to disagree with the others here. I would get that Xbox 360 fixed ASAP. It is worth getting it fixed for playing Fallout 3 (better on 360), Gears of War 2 and the many other awesome titles the xbox 360 supports. Gears of War 2 has a new multiplayer addition called Horde which is supposed to be awesome:D:). Gears of War 2 in general is gonna be the bomb, can't wait to play it tommorow! I know you liked the first one:D.

When it comes to the games and the online community the 360 is superior and subjectively I prefer the 360 controller which is also a big reason I like this console. It is a shame MS has these major hardware problems as setbacks because IMO it is the best gaming console this generation.

Try searching YouTube for videos on how to fix it. My 360 had the RROD and I had it repaired by MS. Then I received the can't play disc error. It was now out of warranty so I didn't have an issue with cracking it open. I went to YouTube and found out there was a magnet that had come loose. 15 minutes later, I had superglued it back on and haven't had a problem since.

Gene, sorry to hear it. I also agree with Sheep that a PS3 is the route I'd go, but that depends on how much you have invested in the 360 - lots of games, controlers, etc...? If so then I'd get it fixed. If you only have 3 or 4 games, I'd have no problem getting rid of it. I'd also have no problem cracking it open, but if you don't know what the issue is, then that may not be any benefit.

I am not a hardcore gamer. What attacks me to XBOX 360 is online playing of Halo 3 and Star Trek Legacy and 1 or 2 other games. I hate the PS3 controller and OSD interface. Most of my gaming time is with my kids on our Wii which never fails us.

I do enjoy killing some snotty teens on Halo 3 at night for 20-30 min after I am done working. Now I guess I will just play the drums until I get my issue resolved. :(

Gene, do you place your 360 and power brick inside an inclosed space or have them out in the open. I noticed the power brick gets hot as well as the console and by moving it from the rug to a hard flat surface helped it run cooler. My xbox still sounds like it is about to take off;). The heat issues are really what kills the 360s, they do not have the proper heatsinks.

No my powerpack is standing upright outside my rack. XBOX 360 is built like a POS IMO. I examined the board layouts and components used and its embarrassing that a company would use so many poor cost techniques. The board layouts are terrible and they don't even optimize trace lengths and in many cases use right angle traces instead of tapering them to lower EMI.

The high failure rate is the main reason why I have never purchased a 360. I have several friends who have them and every single one has broken at least once with the RROD. My supervisor at work is on replacement #4 I believe, but he uses it pretty frequently too.

Can't argue with you there. The hardware is terrible and cheaply bulit. I blame MS engineers. They should have seen these issues in beta testing especially with the excessive heat the console produced during extended use. Not hard take an internal temperature of the machine after you notice how warm the air that is coming out of the back of the console. I am sure they were making cost-effective comprising in the design but these problems should have been seen and addressed before the console was released. These problems are not hard to spot.

Even though hardware sucks, the 360 has the best developmental tools. The 360 is a game developers dream (ease of developing) and the quality of games the xbox 360 supports is the reason why. For 3rd party games, the 360 is usually used as the the lead console in the developmental process and the majority of the time they are better, the latest example is Fallout 3.
The quality of the hardware is POS like you said but the 360 has best support ( game developers, xbox live vs psn, controller (IMO), achievments (PS3 trophy system is still lacking).

Did you open up your 360? If so, MS would consider that tampering and if the people notice that it was taken apart, it would void any type of warranty you have including the 3 RROD.

No I didn't. Though it appears I may also have a Power Supply Issue. The LED is always Orange so I am not sure if my defective console is causing that or if the PS is simply bad. I figured let them fix my consule and worst case I can buy a new PS.

The power supply and the xbox 360 each have seperate diagnostic troubleshooting lights.

There are many different red lights that can show up on the front of your xbox. The 3 RROD represents an internal hardware failure with the conosle itself. (except if the power supply glows red)

Now for the power supply. The orange light does not represent anything wrong with the actuall power supply itself. An orange light is illuminated on the power supply for one of two reasons. Either the console is turned off or the power supply is disconnected from the console. This behavior is typical. It indicates that the power supply is in standby.

Even if the console is turned off, the power supply light may still be illuminated orange. This can occur if the power supply cord is not fully inserted into the power socket of the console.

If the power supply light is orange but the console will not turn on, there may be a problem with the console.

Red Light - Power supply failure and may cause 3RROD to show up on console.

My 360 does actually power up and even when its powered up the PS LED is orange. I believe there are now 4 Red LEDs on my 360 when its on. Originally it was 3 but now I see 4 flashing red.
