Usually the most likely reason is usually the most likely reason. He could as well been taking the woods to a friends house.

I remember when my dad took the mouse to my Amiga 500 (to get me to go outside) that's when I really started using the command line interface (CLI) and really got into computers. Love ya pops!

Some suggested that the youngster was befriended by a stranger online and they just hoped he would eventually return home. Watching the fathers plea the other day was very painful and something I could relate too. Unfortunately the message he was trying to send I fully support but now the guilt and remorse all I can say is WOW.
