All I can say is give me a break! Teen pregnancies has to do with poor parenting and nothing more elegant than that. If sex on TV was causing teen pregnancies to increase, Italy would have one of the highest number of pregnancies and it doesn't. We're so lame in this country it isn't even funny.

I don't know...could be something to it. I didn't watch much sex-related stuff on TV when I was a teen, and I didn't get pregnant. :D

I didn't read the whole article, so maybe this was mentioned. I would tend to link the parenting aspect to how much sex is watched by kids on TV. I didn't watch much of it because my parents "policed" it. At some point, though, they lost control because I had more time to myself - and I wanted to watch it.

It's difficult to make a generalized statement about parenting be bad, IMO. For example, many parents are single parents and need to work long hours to provide for their kids, and therefore their kids spend more time away from their parents. In other cases...yeah, the parents suck - I won't argue that.

Long story short, sounds like I need to subscribe to some Italian TV stations.

Bad parenting is the NO 1 reason for this. I have a 10 year old girl and a 7 yr old boy and I monitor what they watch ALWAYS...I moved out of a neighborhood that was mixed middle and low class folks because of the next door idiots. The family next door to use was single mom 15 year old 12 year old and 6 year old.The 15 yr old gets knocked up.9 months later she drops out of school and gets on welfare. 6 months later the now 13yr old gets knocked up as well:eek:this is after she just stopped going to school for 2 months and the police came to take mom to jail because of kid not going to school. How the hell does a 16 year old get on welfare? The mom just goes I can't control what the girls do when I am not around.WTF? I was floored when I heard that come out of her mouth. I also knew it was time to pack up the house and get out of white trashville. This woman represents what is wrong with leaving your kids to hang out with their OLDER seedy friends with no supervision at all. I really sold my house and left because of our nightmare next door white trash redneck neighbors. Sad but true. The parenting was so bad I had to leave...I encourage people to step up to the plate and be parents. Don't let your kids grow up misguided. Once you have kids it should be all about THEM period. 16 yr olds on welfare?

Nah... You can only get a few here in the states and they're edited for content. Getting some local Euro stations would be great especially after 10pm GMT :)

I think it's a bit of a stretch to link sex on TV to teen pregnancy and agree that parenting is the #1 aspect that affects the latter, in any given circumstance. We've placed such a taboo on certain things that kids growing up want and feel the need to explore those very things that much more - I guess here is one area where I'm a little less conservative in my thinking. The difference between the US and places like Italy, or elsewhere in Europe is that the Puritan Movement took on a life of its own, around the Revolutionary era and indeed helped fuel the Revolutionary spirit and our westward progression across the continent - in Europe the simmer died down, while here in the US it persisted and eventually shaped the moral backbone of what came to be the United States, and well into the 20th century.

The trouble with sex education that we have now, is right when they were telling me not to have sex, I was the horniest I have ever been. I mean, part of the problem is that it is in our nature at a young age, we used to not live as long and needed to have kids younger.

I think TV maybe validates that these ideas in our head at that age aren't abnormal .. and I could see that leading me to being okay with having sex. The truth though, is that i learned more about safe sex as a kid from TV than I did in sex education class. Condom commercials, that scene in Don't Be a Menance in South Central haha, Howard Stern ("I like to use condoms it makes me last longer" and so forth)....

Basically, I think TV and media helped me more than it hurt me.

I would agree with the bad parenting vote. I don't have kids, but when I was a teenager, my parents were very up front with me about sex. My dad came up to me one day and handed me a box of condoms, and told me that wanting to have sex was natural, but be smart about it and don't get girls pregnant. Whenever I needed more, I told my dad and he bought me more condoms. I never got any girls pregnant.

I used to like sex on tv, but it's hard now with the flat-panel and all.

I don't think I ever realized that watching two people pretend (or do the real thing depending on what station:D ) to have sex on the boob tube would cause a girl to get pregnant...

Hee, hee! I chuckled when I heard that. I do the forum using text-to-voice because I lost all sight at the age of 14.

[Kidding, of course. :D]

That is what I say. Wasn't teen pregnancy an epidemic decades ago when there was almost no such thing on TV? There was a peak some time back and been declining ever since? So, I doubt that is the case.
Oh, some want us to get back to that Puritanical society.
