I was in best buy and fell in love with these floor standing martin logan preface speakers. I heard them while playing the incredible hulk movie and also just playing classical music and they sounded great! Does anyone have any experience with these speakers?

I want to get a 7.1 system and the way it would be configured If I went with this would be the ML prefaces for the front and a mixture of Def Tech and Paragiam for the rest. Is it recommened to stick with one brand when designing a 7.1 system or will I be ok mix and matching?

I can get a decent 7.1 system for about $3,000.00 which is a good starting point. I have a friends that spent 6K+ but I don't need to spend that much for what I am looking to do. Plus my ears aren't as well trained as theirs I guess.

Also would anyone recommend other brands I should check out before making my final decision. I plan to purchase within 6 months.

ML makes a great speaker. There are many on this forum that own and swear by them. I like the sound of them but I liked the sound of some other speakers better. It is all sujective to the listener as to what is appealing to your ear. It is most important to match the center and fronts.Surround speakers are not as critical as the fronts center combo. I would try to listen to some more speakers before you buy as this will be a big investment. Have you listened to anything from your local hi fi shop? I myself would stay away if you can from the big box stores ,BB, CC ect... There are too many speakers to list in your price range but I think some folks will chime in .....

I would stick with just one brand.

Rule of thumb: One Brand for all speakers and Same Size Tweeters & Midrange Drivers/Woofers. Not critical, but recommended.

Stick with 1 brand. Also keep in mind that ML's are hungry speakers and needs a good amount of juice to sing.

If the OP bought a pair of Purities he would require no amp at all. :D

I'm a fan of ML as well. So much so I got my parents to buy a home theater using their speakers!

I have yet to hear the Prefaces, but they are getting a fair share of airtime at another forum. Whatever you do, make sure to match at least the fronts, if not the rest.

The best match would be a 3rd Preface for your center speaker. Nothing can possibly be a better match, or implementation. Less that, the Fresco-i is the next best match (though some still opt for tweeter/stat hybrids).

I've got one for sale here:

looks 100% perfect with grille on except for a small blemish on the bottom. perfect working condition, and the picture makes it look about 100 times worse than in person. cheers.

feel free to PM with either questions regarding ad, or really for any other advice that you might seek. I use ML stats for the stereo.

Is the Fresco an LCR type speaker that can be used for all three fronts or are they center only?

Well, they are LCR, but I've been told they still function best in the vertical position (and perhaps that person didn't know what he was talking about). OTOH, I'm sure you could say that about a lot of LCR speakers.

The Fresco-i is very good with dialogue IMO. It has two ATF drivers as opposed to the one in the Vignettes.

Thanks

I want to thank everyone for their input on this. I know I want a 7.1 system. However my budget may not call for the top of the line. I really like ML, but I also like def tech, and paradiam.

I checked 6th ave elctronics and they only carry dev techs and paradiam. They are not a ML dealer. I need to find a store that carrys a variety of different brands so I can sample them. I know harveys went out of business so I will need to find a local retailer.

Now if I go with the ML set I like, the problem is going to match that center channel as well is another 1K. I can get a nice dev tech center for half the price, and then finish the set off with a nice sub, and dev tech's and paradiam speakers.

Can I get a decent 7.1 set where I will hear the clarity of the music when listening to music, and also nice surrounds when playing a move for around 3K?

The set I just described above was from BB and they priced it out for me. I really don't want to go more than 3-4K on speakers if I can help it.

Now I would love to have one brand all around, and I love ML but not sure if I can afford the entire set to be ML. Also a friend said as long as I match the fronts and center, and I get rears and sides that are timber matched I should be ok. Is this true?

Also Would I save money getting speakers that have built in subs compared to buying a sepreate sub?
