holy crap...you are the man! Almost too much to consider haha. Well i will be perusing this list for quite some time.
Aside from the psw505, two that look pretty interesting on that list are the:
Boston Acoustics HPS 12HO Midnight Subwoofer
and
Velodyne DPS-10 Subwoofer
anyone have any opinions on those? I saw that you (Gimpy Ric) said you had the Velodyne...does it deliver enough power? Just wondering because the other two are 12in and 300W.

No I had an Infinity PS-12. It was pretty nice. I still vote for the BIC H-100 in that price class :).

well can you tell me what you think of that sub? It looks like an absolutely amazing deal, but I am always wary at what the user claims the real value is.

I've never heard one, but have often seen it recommended as a good budget subwoofer. I know it was rated by Craig, so it must be popular.

sorry Gimpy you posted at exactly the same time as i did so i didnt see your response. Yea i don't know how i made that mistake with what sub you said you had...but anyway, what do you think of this used sub. It is a discontinued model, but it seems that the msrp is nearly $1000 and i definitely don't mind scratches...heck i could care less what the think looks like as long as it delivers a product worthy of the price.

Edit:haha dangit you keep commenting right when i am...its sad that $1000 is still considered in the budget range...just means that i am totally screwed!

They said "Only used 10 hours in a review" which means they beat the hell out of it testing it for 10 hours. I might buy used electronics, but I have no use for used speakers, I'm scared they might have been abused. But thats just me.

normally i would completely agree with you...I don't normally buy anything electronics related that is at all used, but this seems like a HUGE deal. It may very well be the only chance i have to own such a nice sub for quite some time (until several years after i get out of grad school) so this is quite tempting. Basically, do y'all think that it is worth the risk considering how much of a deal it is(trying to see the situation from my perspective)?

There are lots of other people in here who know a lot more about this stuff than I do, but I suspect there are a few things that contribute to the price of subwoofers that make them look disproportionately more expensive than other types of speakers.

One is that most have their own internal amplifiers. Essentially, you're getting something that most speakers don't have in them: electronics.

Another thing is that subs are, typically, a lot bigger than other types of speakers. Simply put: more materials, more expenses.

The construction of the drivers, too, to generate the low end frequencies probably contributes as well. I gotta believe that while all speakers require some clever engineering, there's gotta be something about subwoofers and the acoustic challenges they present that make them more expensive.

And while it's not part of the cost of manufacturing, due to their weight, shipping for subwoofers is probably substantially more expensive than a normal speaker.

Just my thoughts.

BIC H100 fits the budget and should do you well for what you want. Worth a look
