Sorry I need five posts to post links, so the links will be posted in the next post.
so im trying to get myself a fully functioning 2.1 system. So here is my question: Assuming I plan on buying these speakers

and this sub

what else do i need to get myself fully up and running. Assume that i have nothing but these two items. Also, as you can see, I am on a quite tight budget, so if you would kindly recommend parts that are a bang for the buck! I know this is a little involved so thanks in advance for anyones help :)!
(url's for the two items are in order in the next post)

What is your budget exactly? It doesn't say. The sub looks good but the speakers I would stay away from. WIth the exception of Yamaha, its not recommended to go with an electronics company that also makes speakers.

You would need a receiver and you probably want DVD/CD playback capability. I can't really recommed a receiver (no budget) but I can recommed a cheap DVD player. If they are still on the market, there is a small DVD player that is just a little bigger than a DVD. It sold for $15-$25 dollars and mine was an Insignia brand from Best Buy. Its really cheap but plays DVDs and CDs well enough. On mine the component outputs were miswired and non-functional, but I am using it on S video. I didn't have need for the component video untill I had it for a couple of years, so I did't know to take it back. The idea here is you buy one and if it doesn't work, take it back and get another. If the second one is screwed up I would just take it back for a refund. If it works, it will probably work for a few years at least. Mine is still working after 3 or 4 years. If it breaks, whats $15-$25 for a throwaway DVD and CD player. Later on when you have more money, you can upgrade to a better player or blu-ray. I have seen these players marketed under different labels - Colby for one I think.

First it would be nice to know your expectation, and uses of this 2-channel system. Are you just looking for something better then your television speakers? Are you looking to put together a 2-channel music system?

Budget?

i am looking to have a 2-channel music system. I was hoping the price of those items would give you an idea as to my budget, but basically the speakers are 100, the sub is 150-200. In other words im working with a college students budget. And thanks for the crap cd/dvd idea :) I also want it to be good at movies, but mainly for all types of music

Considering your budget and that you are a college student how about something like this for your computer. http://www.axiomaudio.com/audiobytecomputerspeakers.html

This would an excellent pc setup and great for near field listening and will not take up a lot of space.

wow that is actually a very interesting prospect...a little more than i wanted to spend for a full set up, but considering my main usage will be hooked up to my computer, it looks like this system can't be beat. This may be just what i am looking for. Thanks for the recommendation :)

Well just after spending 5 years at university myself I noticed everything is done by computers, doing online quizzes, downloading lecture notes, submitting assignments, and more obvious things like doing research and writing lab reports or essays. It is safe to say you will be spending many hours of the day on your computer.

You will not need to buy an amplifier. In general, university students download lots of movies and music (need to stay on a budget to pay for more important things;)). This system would be great for music, watching movies and playing video games (if you are into all those things).

IMO I would stick with simple simple while you are at college and when you graduate and have some money saved buy a more expensive home theatre system.

If are seriously considering these I would email one of Axioms customer service representatives and they will let you know of your options and any other questions you have. They offer excellent advice and they really stand by their products if you ever have problems in the future. If you live in North America excluding states like Hawaii and Alaska, the shipping should be included in the price.
