Help - Sony HT-SS2300 - Hook up headphones

I just purchased the Sony HT-SS2300 receiver system (HTIB, really) and its fantastic. BUT it doesnt have a headphone jack on it and I really want to get a nice pair of wireless headphones to use with it. How can I do this? My setup is as follows:

Samsung PN50A450 50" Plasma TV - HDMI input from Receiver
Sony S350 BluRay - HDMI out to receiver
Sci Atlantic DVR 8300HD - HDMI out to receiver
Sony HT-SS2300 receiver, HDMI out to TV

I dont mind having to spend up to ~$300 for the headphones, but I just cannot figure out how to do it!

Welcome to the forum!

A lot of the wireless headphones that I've seen don't actually plug into a headphone jack. The transmitter section plugs into either a set of analog RCA jacks or a digital audio jack, either of which is generally located on the back of the receiver or HTIB main unit. The problem with a lot of the HTIB systems is that they have pretty limited connectivity. Unfortunately, your Sony HT-SS2300 (based on their website) doesn't have any outputs except for the HDMI output. However, your TV has both analog and digital outputs, so you could run the headphones off of the TV pretty easily. A potential downside is that the TV would need to be on to do it (even if you were just listening to music).

EDIT: Even if the headphones use a headphone jack, you can get a very inexpensive adapter cable to convert that to plug into the RCA analog audio jacks. Let me find one for you. Just a second.

If im running bluray or hdtv through HTML to the receiver, then HTML to the TV -- the audio is staying at the receiver and the video is continuing on to the tv (in my limited understanding at least!) -- my TV has plenty of outputs but how do I set it up so the audio comes through to the TV instead of staying at the receiver, or does it go to both places? Im following you on the concept and im psyched - but not clear on putting it into practice.

Let me download and read through the owner's manual for your Sony system. I'll check how to do that. Hopefully it won't be like some other systems in that you can't process audio over HDMI and pass it through at the same time (meaning that you would have to go into the menu to change it when you wanted to switch to headphones) - more an inconvenience than anything, really.

Here is one example of the type of converter cable that I was talking about.

I'll post again after I look through the manual.

Well, you would need to toggle between having HDMI audio passed through to your TV or played over your HT-SS2300 speakers.

From page 21 of the owner's manual (available from Crutchfield here):

When you want to listen to the sound from the TV speaker, set "AUDIO FOR HDMI" to "TV+AMP" in the VIDEO menu (page 37). If you cannot play back multi channel software, set to "AMP". However, the sound will not output from the TV speaker.​

However, the good news is that you can pass audio to the TV over the HDMI connection.

Hopefully there is a better way to do this, but it's not coming to mind for me. Maybe someone else here has (or will have) some ideas. Give it a little time to see if anyone else chimes in. There's a great group of people here.

It worked! I set the Video Menu on the sony SS2300 to be AMP+TV and now I get sound out of the TV and receiver simultaneously -- then, i plugged in headphones into the headphone jack on the TV and turned up the TV volume - boom - audio in the headphones. Hit mute on the receiver and im good to go. Thanks so much!

Terrific! I'm really glad that it's all working.

I'm embarrassed that I misinterpreted what that paragraph in the manual was saying. At first, I thought that you could get sound out of both, but then I convinced myself that you could only get sound from one at a time. Sorry for that! I'm glad that you were smart enough to figure it out, in spite of what I said.
