sub recommendation

Well i suppose you may get this post pretty frequently around here, but hopefully some of you aren't too annoyed by questions like this and can help me out. I am looking to purchase a sub in the very near future. I am looking for something that will put minimal hurting on my wallet while not being absolute crap. To give you an idea of the price range I'm looking for, I was strongly thinking about buying a pair of tSc TSBLs as part of the 2.1 system that I hope to complete with the sub that you guys recommend. I can't afford something much if any more expensive than those TSBLs and would honestly prefer something closer to 100. This will almost exclusively be used to listen to music. I listen to all kinds, but I am hoping to be able to get output strong enough to have a good house party i.e. pretty respectable volume/low cut-off frequency. To sum that up, I'm not an audiophile and would be willing to sacrifice quality if it gives me a decent return in in bass "umph", but at the same time, when I listen to classical, I don't want it to sound like muffled crap. Hope you guys can help me out here.

I would do some saving. Speakers last you a very long time. A good speaker today is going to be a good speaker decades in your future.

With your budget, I'd look into a nice headphone setup. In my opinion, that's the way to get awesome music listening experiences for low dollars. It won't cover your house parties, but you can always borrow some speakers from a friend.

Well, his budget is pretty low and we might be able to find something sufficient, but I don't think he'll fall in love with it. A headphone system in his budget is vary doable, and would sound great! It's just an opinion for him to think about though, we can always go back and recommend subs.

Those speakers are like around 100 bucks. I have no idea what to recommend.

Why are subs so expensive...you can find a great pair of bookshelf speakers for 100...why not a sub as well. Yea I would love to have a great pair of headphones, but the sub is a more pressing need. At the most, I could spend just at or slightly above 200 for a sub. By the way thank you for trying to help.

In your price range there is no better optoin than the Dayton Sub 100 or Sub 120 depending on exactly how much you want to spend. These units are high quality and low price.

Do note, they will not cause earthquakes, this just is not possible at your price point, but if you want a solid performer there is no better option.

thank you very much avaserfi! exactly the kind of recommendation i was looking for. One more question. How would that Dayton Sub 120 compare to say the Polk Audio PSW505 sub. Yes i know there is a decent price difference, but i just want to get a feel for the quality of that 120.

by the way, although the list price of the 505 is in the 500 dollar range, it can be bought for 240 on amazon so take that into consideration as to whether it might be worth saving up for that much longer or whatever

If you do a search on this forum on the polk psw505, you'll find the general opinion of it is...underwhelming, let's say. I don't know of any direct one-to-one comparisons with the dayton, though.

well it seems to me that, after a search through this site, that the majority of people that have a low opinion of it have never owned one. As a matter of fact the only forum topic i've seen on one is:

in which the guy seems to quite enjoy his first impression.

Anyway the main thing is that I am wondering if a psw505 is worth getting at the 210-250 price line or if there are subs decently better in that same price range. It just seems, despite not completely positive reviews, that getting it for that cheap is a steal and that that is the best thing i can get for the money. If I am wrong then please let me know.

If you like the Polk, go to a Best Buy and listen to one if they have any on the floor. Compare it to ALL other subs in the same price class, 10", 12" different wattage, makes models, etc. Bring your own bass heavy music with you. Act like your going to buy one that day to get some attention.

Now see if like the Polk 505. Only you can make that decision. Another forum member has a brother with one and he likes it.

For the record I've never heard one, so I have no opinion about them. Other forum members have heard them and were not impressed, but many of us own high dollar subs and have higher standards.

The Dayton kits are not a bad option. Construction is easy, just a screwdriver I think. I hope you can find the best option for you

I recently upgraded from a Polk sub. I had the DSW PRO500. Its a 500ish dollar sub and I was very underwhelmed by it. I got online and did the research and bought an Outlaw LFM-1 EX (which is 600+shipping) and it sounds like its worth 3 times as much as my old Polk.

I'm not saying that you need to go and spend 600 bucks on a sub (although if you did you would be very happy ) but rather than going through stourebought (Polk, Klipsch, Velodyne) for a subwoofer you will get double to triple the bang for your buck with the internet direct companies.

I would bet that you would have to spend $1400 on one of the new Polk micro subs to compete with my $600 Outlaw. Bottom line is if you do your research online your money will be much better spent.

Well here is the thing, the sub you upgraded from is $50 more(msrp) than the 505, but i can buy the 505 for $250 right now on amazon! I realize from general opinions that the 505 is not worth the msrp compared to other subs in that price range, but if i can get it for HALF the msrp, will other subs in the $250 category compete?

Thank you very much for the sound advice! The only problem with this strategy is that i will only get a picture of what store brand subs in that price range will sound like...which usually are a decent rip off for their price class as far as i have heard.

Also thank you for realizing about high standards. I am completely new at this so while some of you wouldn't buy the 505 even if it were $10 because your ears are so conditioned to top of the line audio, consider that increase in price will have much more of a diminishing return effect for me because i will not be able to tell the difference between one sub and the next once high dollar stuff is reached.

wow that looks very tempting. Not that i want to be a skeptic, but i will post a new question with the stats for each sub(505 and these) on the subwoofer board and see what people think. I want to make sure of the prevailing opinion and then that is what i will go for! thanks for finding me something to match it up against!
