SVS or Cerwin Vega?

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie to Audioholics but I have done some research about adding a home theatre system to my existing setup. After contacting a couple local dealers (Sonic Boom Audio in Canada), they are offering me a 10% discount on preorders of the SBS and SCS 01 speaker packages. I am interested in the SCS 01(M) Deluxe 5.0 system with the PB12-NSD subwoofer at $1394.10 before taxes & shipping, is this a great system for a good price?

I was also looking into Cerwin-Vega, specifically the CVHD 5.1 speaker system. Costco has them for $749 including shipping and will pick them up from my door if I'm not satisfied with them. Are these speakers any good? I am leaning more towards the SVS for future proofing my system.

Lastly I would require a 5.1 channel amplifier with at least 2 optical inputs and 2 digital coax inputs, hdmi would be nice but for the price I've seen I can make do without. I've heard people say Onkyo and Harmon Karmon are good receivers for the price, I've also looked at JVC and Pioneer, what would be a good recommendation for a 5.1 home theatre? My price range including speakers is $2000 or less (Canadian lol).

Hope to hear your opinions soon.

Welcome!

The CV's are for playing loud and hard for parties. SVS has them beat in every other way and are no slouches themselves. Canada has some great speaker manufacturers. Have you also checked out Axiom, PSB, Energy, Paradigm, for example?

SVS over Cerwin.

Marantz, Denon, and Yamaha over the others. In order of my preference. All have their own separate little pluses in each price-range.

I've looked at Energy and Paradigm as well, my first preference was Dahlquist however I can't find any left in Canada. My friend has a set of Dahlquist Orbits and a 12" sub, watching movies and playing xbox was never better, lol.

Most of the reviews I have read, the home system for most audiophiles are Axiom, I just figured they would be out of my price range. :D

Any model suggestions for those Denon amplifiers?

Thanks for the welcome and the quick responses, btw.

Honestly, I wouldn't even put Cerwin Vega in the same sentence as SVS <-except for that one.

A friend of mine had some old Cerwin-Vega speakers and they were plenty loud, I thought the new CVHD 5.1 with 6 x 3" woofers and tweeter per speaker and 12" sub for $749 was a great deal. The review I read on Audioholics boasted about the sub, and I know SVS makes great subs, just wanted opinions to compare.

I have actually auditioned several Dahlquist speakers. The dealer also had Klipsch. I preferred Klipsch. I don't like Klipsch. At all. So I doubt I can be of any help for your speaker preference.;)

Just for the record, since you are a new member, I am a Cerwin owner. I have a pair of D7's I purchased in 1985. They just don't make 'em like that any more. And by today's standards, they suck.;)

IMO you are not going to get the performance from those other manufacturers for what the SVS system cost.

Axiom M2 v2 (2 pairs) = $460
Axiom VP100 = $255
HSU STF-2 = $382
Total = $1,097 Shipped

Not too far off :) Upgrade the STF-2 to a 12" SVS and the price is pretty close. Although I'm not sure if these prices apply in Canada.

Well I decided on the SVS SCS-01(M) 5.0 Deluxe speaker package and PB12-NSD subwoofer, the salesman also recommended the Onkyo TXSR606 receiver for $500. I saw it cheaper on Amazon.com, however the warranty is only covered in the USA, when I bring it to Canada there is no warranty. :(
Is this receiver enough for the 5 SVS speakers? The receiver runs at 90W x 7 @ 8ohms 20hz-20khz. Should I look for anything higher wattage in that price range?

That receiver should work fine. You'll have an excellent system.

I hope you post pics, and start your own thread here

Also look at the Marantz 4003, Pioneer 1018 and the Yamaha 663 as comparable alternatives.

Please let us know of your experience with Sonic Boom (svs canada). I am interested in buying a sub from them in the future.

Don't you worry, the day I get these they will be playing ironman at the point where the jericho missile hits and all of my walls crumble. :D
Will be sure to let you know my experience, so far Mason (manager?) has been more than helpful, and very quick to respond to emails.
