PSB speakers.... 6ohm?

I am looking into the PSB T65 tower speakers. And looking at the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver. On the PSB website it says the impedence is 6 ohms but minimum is 4 ohms. I thought most home theatre speakers were 8 ohms. Will i have to change anything on this receiver to compensate for it being either 6 ohms or 4 ohms? I am confused so any help would be great!

Does the 606 have pre-outs to add and ext. amp? Those T65's will like power. Maybe drop down to the T55 (or 45), get an avr with pre-outs and an amp or get a higher model AVR.

No preouts on Onkyo until you get to the 705/706 and above.

6 ohm will be fine.

Don't change any ohm setting in the receiver.

I also support the idea of getting a receiver with pre-outs. A receiver without them is a waste of money. IMO

So the 705 will have preouts to add a separate amplifier? What amps would you recommend around the $500 and under range? Cheaper is better if it will work for the PSB T65's.

Just start with the receiver power. It will be fine. The pre-outs are for as your desire grows. It never stops.

If you have $500 extra, invest that in the speakers now.

I own a complete home theater package based on the Image series, using T45s, the older 8c center (c45 now) and the 1B surrounds (nowb15) all being driven by a Technics SA940 which is alot less powerful than your Onkyo. I've had this setup for 7 years now and filled the room with 85+db without harm to the receiver. Your Onkyo will be just fine and leave it at the 8ohm setting. The 65s although 6ohms are very efficient speakers and its doesn't take alot of power to make them sing.

Or spend $100 more for an Onkyo 805 and get a lot more amp. Should delay the need for one for a while longer. Even the 806 will no longer have the Ultra amp. The 805 weighs roughly DOUBLE the 606/706/806... AFAIK.

Warning: its huge. its heavy. Prices have ranged from $425-650 depending on if refurbished vs new, vendor, and particular sale. Won't be many left, if there are still any. IMO, best receiver value of '08.

Very informed post. Thanks for that, in case the OP doesn't see it.

OP - "original poster" (and yes that's you) or sometimes is used as "original post".

Its not EPO, but Emotiva I believe. This brand along with Outlaw are the two most popular ID (internet direct) brands for AV amps there are.

I was about to find you links, but all you have to do is google. No, pluggin in outlaw by itself might not get it for you, so why don't you try "outlaw amplifier"?

(you can also google acronyms, btw).

edit: have you heard the T65s in person? They are very deep in dimension, IMO.

Although I'm a huge PSB fan, I encourage you to audition as many speakers as you can. You may find some you like better than the PSBs. The T65 are big speakers as Jostenmenat already referred too. You'll need some room to place them, keeping them away away from the sidewalls and back of the walls by at least 16" .

For auditioning purposes;
What I would do is to take a pad of paper with you, write down the make and
model of each speaker you audition and what you liked and disliked about the
speakers you were auditioning. Was the bass tight and deep or was it boomy
and loose sounding? Were the mids life like or were they hollow or just too
pronounced? Was the treble irritating and harsh or were they dark and not
revealing or were they smooththat made you want to listen for more? How was the imaging?

Bring music with you that you are very familiar with and know quite well. To
make it easier to audition HT speaker systems, listen to the main speakers in 2
channel mode with music. Music is much harder to reproduce accurately then a movie soundtrack so if the speakers do well with music, then they will do wellwith HT. Speakers that do HT well may not do well with music. When auditioning the center channel of the same brand and series as the main speakers, pick a difficult source like an announcer that mumbles alot. If you can understand what the mumbling announcer is saying, then you have a good center channel.

I would go to speciality stores first and start auditioning speakers first
instead of going to the internet first. Once your likes are determined, you can
mention them here and fellow members can make internet brand recommendations based on your likes/dislikes. The specality stores are better setup acousticaly then the big box stores which will make auditioning a little easier. It will give you an idea of what you like in a speaker.

Keep track of what amp or receiver is powering the speakers you're auditioning. Try to get a receiver/amp that closest resembles what you have or want to get. It just reduces another variable when audtioning speakers.

One thing to keep note off. When auditioning speakers, make sure the volume
levels are matched between the diiferent speaker pairs because the louder
speaker pair will always sound better. Listen to levels that you think you
would listen to most of the time because thats how you are going to be using
them most of the time.
