I know this question gets asked alot but here is goes.
I just got a Panasonic DMP BD30 and I have it hooked up via hdmi to an Onkyo TX-sr605. I know the Panny bitstreams Truehd and dts-ma to the onkyo.
I read this in a cnet review of the panny:
"Panasonic's DMP-BD30 is one of the first Blu-ray players that can output both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks in bitstream format, to be decoded by compatible receivers....Actually getting the DMP-BD30 to output the high-resolution audio soundtracks in bitstream format is a bit of a headache, too--be sure to check out our Tips and Tricks section for easy instructions"
Tips and tricks section:
If you have a brand-new AV receiver with onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, you'll want to set the DMP-BD30 for bitstream output to take advantage of these high-resolution soundtracks. However, actually getting the DMP-BD30 to output these soundtracks at their full resolution can be a little confusing. Here's what you need to do to get it working.
Press setup on the remote
Choose "Audio"
Choose "Digital Audio Output"
Set the top four options to "Bitstream"
Set the bottom option, "BD-Video Secondary Audio" to off.
Exit the setup menu
Now just play a Blu-ray movie with a high-resolution soundtrack, and your receiver should indicate that it's decoding the high-resolution audio.
I followed those steps and I played Batman Begins and chose the Truehd soundtrack. It didnt particularly sound like 5.1 truehd and it didnt say Truehd on the Onkyo display.
On the Onkyo i chose the "hdmi" input source. Should I be using another input source? Anybody knows if i'm missing anything?
