I'm sure there are receivers out there which will outperform the 1018 but for the money, and for what "I need" in a reciever, this one fits just fine. I highly reccomend the 1018. heck for under $500, how could you go wrong.
The issue is not at all whether the receiver will power your Bose speakers. If that were the final goal, we'd find you a receiver under $200 and be done with it. The issue here is that you are starting to look at speakers that sound good, that sound great, in fact. Some of the speakers you encounter in your shopping will demand physical requirements of an amp that this receiver does not have. Many of the best sounding speakers have electrical characteristics that will turn that receiver into a toasted lump of plastic and aluminum if you were to crank up Motley Crue to high volume for extended periods and sound like crap while doing it.

If you insist that this receiver is all you want to drive your speakers, then you will have to limit your speaker search to the speakers it is capable of driving, which eliminates very many great sounding speakers. You can't defy physics.

Or let me put it this way. I made the exact same decision you did. While I was out shopping for speakers, I bought a receiver because I figured I would have to have something to plug the speakers into when I brought them home, so I bought the Denon 2307, a fine receiver to be sure. Then I fell in love with the Era D5 and found the 2307 simply fell short of the capability to drive them to the level I wanted with the likes of Metallica, Ozzy, etc. In the end, I picked up the Rotel amp to compensate for my receiver not being able to drive my speaker choice for my listening habits. Had I been smart, I would have picked my speakers, then chosen the receiver that could drive them.

The smart money says find a set of speakers you absolutely love. Go crazy, stretch the budget, shop above your means, camp out at the high end boutique stores if you have to, but most of all, LOVE YOUR SPEAKERS.* The whole rest of the audio budget is simply to support the sound that comes out of the speakers, from content sources to the electrical charactristics of the amp.

*Just not in the ParadigmDawg sort of way, eww.

Also the fact that even if he went with some Klipsch RF-82 or RF-83 which are over 95dB, it still won't change the fact that they go down to 3ohm. Once he cranks up Motley Crue to the levels he is talking about they will blow that receiver to bits.

I’ve been without a computer for over a week. I couldn’t get past a blue start-up "screen of death". Long story short – I did a clean install but the system was too unstable to make it through a simple start-up, w/out the blue screen coming back. Thing was 6 years old so I was forced to buy a new one.

Also last week, I learned that my job would be relocating in early 2009. So, any speaker purchase will really be dependant on where I end up, what type of home we settle on, and the room all of this wil be set up in.

All said, Thanks to all for your help, input and support. This was most appreciated. :)

Doug, sorry that you had to buy a new computer, but hopefully it's nicer than the old one. Seems like a little bit more has been taken out of the original budget. :)

Good luck with the job. Do you know (and do you want to say) the general region to which you'll be moving?

Oh yeah. $1K came out of my "speaker budget" to pay for my new laptop. It's all good. I was in serious need of an upgrade anyway. Just not how I had it planned. :(

Not sure where, or which way I'll be heading 'yet'. This happens every 2 to 3 years and it's growing old. My next to last stop was out your way (Glendale AZ.) Waaaaaaaaaaay too hot out there  so I'm praying AZ is out of the mix this time.

Be good -- Doug ~

Northern Arizona, like Flagstaff, is apparently pretty nice and much cooler. I don't travel much, so my experience is pretty much with Tucson. I'll agree with you...it's hot! Honestly, though, I got acclimated after about two or three years. Just stay inside during the day when it's summer, and then enjoy the rest of the year. It's starting to get decent here now. Fall and Spring are fantastic.

I've been to Flagstaff a few times. Sedona (north of Phoenix-south of Flagstaff) didn't seem as hot and was nicer weather than PHX. I attended a conference in Tucsan one year (In August) and couldn't breathe!! I agree -- the weather from mid-October to May out your way was sweet.

Yea, AZ is gorgeous. Flagstaff area, during the winter seeing a field of cacti and snow, with moonlight brightly reflecting and casting cactus shadows is pretty cool. Didn't even know that existed.

And having the Grand Canyon for a backyard is not too shabby. :)

While Tucson is insanely hot in the summer, it is also quite a nice area during the rest of the year, IMO.
