Speakerman,

Thanks for sharing your photos, and thoughts so far with us. :D
Thanks Maz. I honestly am impressed. These speakers are heavy and built like tanks. The finish is better than I thought it would be too. The sound really is that good. One way to describe the sound is being very accurate sounding. Kind of a confidence if you will. I do believe, however, that I could use more power. The Yammie 663 does a decent job, but these speakers can take more-much more from what I can tell so far. This may be one of my most significant upgrades ever. ;);)

Cheers,

Phil

Thanks jost. What kind of treatments would you recommend? The center channel will have door stoppers under it next chance I get. One of my installers made me a platform to put my center-channel under it while the base of my LCD rest atop of it. The problem is, he painted it some ugly color and I plan to repaint it this weekend. Once done, everything will look much better when I get this done. Appreciate you posting.

Cheers,

Phil
Well, the bang for buck is definitely DIY. GIK is very popular. I have both GIK and Real Traps. I prefer the latter's product, but its MUCH more expensive. Of the typical products between the two its usually heavier and/or more massive with Real Traps, with better fit and finish IMO. You also can choose between HF versions, or regular. I got them as used, but even then its still very expensive.

Your room looks very modest, so Id look towards bass trapping as a pretty big priority. Maybe some GIK tri traps in the front corners. Maybe even all corners (because IIRC you love your subs and have three of them?!). Then for reflection points, the sidewall is the first Id be looking at due to the very close proximity of the speakers there.

From there, Id experiment with panel(s) at the front or rear. Even perhaps the ceiling at some point.

But bass trapping is of large concern right now I think. Remember, you don't have to do it all at once. Add a couple here and there over time. Eventually, the cumulative effect should help out the room quite a bit. Make sure to check the classifieds regularly. Acoustical treatments are kind of hard to abuse, don't "fail", aren't "refurbished", or out of warranty. So they get eaten up real fast on the classifieds. Gotta be quick when you see them.

Great, interesting read. I will keep all of this in mind. My goal with this room was to keep it simple so to speak. But, I want the size of the room to help me maximize the effect I do get. I may also be ordering a BR player real soon. Getting tired of waiting on the OPPO. The Sony 350 looks very promising and right now the price is right! I may also look to upgrade my receiver much further down the road. Basically, I am going to stay broke. :D:D You know the drill right? :p:p Thanks once again for your help my friend.

Cheers,

Phil

You are very welcome, Phil. I can't remember if I directed you towards my post already (cuz I though I might've), but read my first post below. A shoot-out, and PLEASE look at the "LINK" at the very bottom of the post. Sale, even with the S350. But, I think* the Panny might be the best deal. If sticking with your 663, that receiver cannot matrix the new codecs if bistreamed. However, I know you are not using 7.1 in that room, but the panny can only bitstream. Just an FYI.

just in case you miss the link, i'll post here for redundancy

Thanks jost. So, you feel the Panny 30K would be a better deal than the Sony350? I plan on keeping my 663 for now anyways. I really dont understand why you feel that way? Can you explain in a bit more detail? It would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Phil

Mike, basing solely on memory I believe the SVS finish is just a tad better. Nothing night or day if you will. Both are very close. To be honest, I kinda like it. But, then again I do live alone and have no WAF to worry about. Hope that answers your question. If not, shoot me a PM.

it does actually, was just wondering if you put them side by side, if you'd think they're the same finish.

Well, in some ways yes. But, it seems the SVS just looked a bit better. Enough so that you can tell a slight difference. My guess, is they really are not the same. I really don't think you would be unhappy with it either way. It is like a Coke or Pepsi question if you know what I mean.:cool:

Ya know, I didn't know what the heck I was talking about. I have no real proof whatsoever that the Panny might be a better player. However, the S350 failed HD video resolution loss test as well as motion adaptive processing in that link. Only the BD-50 passed all tests, but that doesn't mean the BD-30 would...

The BD-30 is bad for SD-DVD, so if this purchase is for this use as well, look elsewhere. It only bitstreams the new codecs, but you're taken care of there. There are a few owners here that have very good experiences with this player, but I think Wayde Robson the mod has had some audio issues. I believe he's going to try FW before moving on to yet another player. It is also not profile 2.0. I don't care in the slightest, but you might hate that.

350 is $280. The BD-30 is now "currently unavailable" with that deal, so nevermind!

jost, I will be watching regular dvds. As such, it sounds like the 30K may not be my best option at this point in time. The BD-50 is just out of my price range right now. Like you, I could care-less about the 2.0 profile. I just want a good BR player that does a good job with BR dvds as well as the new sound codecs. That is why I was leaning towards the 350.

Phil

Side x side they are pretty close to the same.
I ran downs stairs and took a look. The match pretty well:D. The only thing that differs from Svs and Ascend is the Ascends have a seam in the front and Svs Pb10 is seamless so that may make it look better? The texture itself match. Both are smooth with a slight orange peel look.

Hey Mike, that may explain why I said the SVS look a bit better. Nothing night or day difference. Thanks for checking yourself.
