Harmony 1000 problems...

Hey all. I just got the Harmony 1000 and it easy to use except the software doesn't give you the freedom to do advance customizations.

First: I have my DirecTV HD DVR box set to receive RF signals instead of IR, but the 1000 doesn't work and only works when I switched the setting to IR again.

Second: I have a media center setup and I need my TV to change to HDMI2/DVI and then the receiver switched to CD in order to operate see and hear the computer, but when I want to do this it wont let me without adding another media device. (I select "Listen to Music" and I have also tried "Listen to CD") So I have to have the DVD player also included, so now it will turn on each time I click my preset "Media Center" button on the screen, but all I want is just the TV and Receiver to be functioning.

Any ideas on how to fix these two problems?

Also, I use a wireless keyboard, so my media center has a USB RF receiver plugged in. You think the 1000 remote could be programmed to work with it?
Thanks for your help!

No it can not be programed to work oem rf. I try to program devices for every activity when setting up remotes. HTPC control is tricky with some universals(double tap when single was pushed, ir intergration, ect), The need to write macros, tods, and workarounds becomes more apparent as systems and their control level grow. A complete list of gear and connections might help with advice. If it looks like you need another control device can you return the harmony? Good Luck

I havent worked with the harmony programming software enough to say for sure if there is a way to keep the dvd player turned off regarding your second question. Many times its necessary in a system to turn all the components on at the same time to simplfy things which means that you will have the dvd player turned on when your watcing cable or whatever. It wont hurt it to be turned on and not being used.

If you want more control I reccomend looking at the Universal Remote lineup. You can pretty much do whatever you want with them. The pronto touchscreen remote I have is even more flexible than that but its a bit more difficult to program than the universals, which are, i think for the average person more difficult to program than the harmony's

My feelings are that the harmony line is dumbed down too much so that the average person can understand it (apparently people no longer have the ability to comprehend written instructions) and that severely limits their flexibility. I would never buy or reccomend one.

As Bandphan says, infrared is the option. The rest of the issue is simply programming. Spend some time exploring the on-line programming options. They can cover literally everything but you may need to make some adjustments to some of the parameters instead of relying fully on the defaults.
