#6. Lose an engine on a DC-10 two hours out over the ocean...and it wasn't pretty when it went. A few loud metal grinding sounds and plumes of dark smoke that followed bu thankfully we made it back here to Ireland where I've been for the past eight hours waiting on another bird to take us home.

That is very scary! I am glad you made it to the ground safely. Make it home in one piece Matt. You have a family to take care of.....:) I hope your next flight is much smoother for you.

Woah! I bet that caused a little panic on the plane. I'm glad that everyone is okay!

BTW, that's #6? I can't wait for the rest of your list. :)

Glad to made it okay! I had a similar problem on an airplane when I was younger, only we didn't make it back and I spent the summer in a hospital and still have a scar all the way up my stomach and others around my body. I'd say bad things in airplanes should be on everyones list, they truely suck! Glad you made it back buddy!

Now, there's a story that I think we need you to expand on!

Not to jack Matt's thread, but that sounds very interesting. Not that losing an engine over the ocean isn't...

Man, talk about scary. I'm so glad that it turned out for the best. But really, #6 on the list? I don't think I want to know the top 5 and it's unlikely that I will ever be in a position to find out.

Well, it's a guesstimate...I thought of a couple things right off the top of my head...six sounded good.;)

Sept. 12th 1987 - C 2 fracture to the neck with no Spinal Cord Damage. Dodged the bullet.

May 28th 1988 Crashed 600 Ninja broke C 3-4 Vertebra and was on vent for 7 weeks. Thank God I can breathe on my own. Still chugging along 20 plus years later! Motto: IT CAN ALWAYS BE WORSE!

Worse fear? I'll break my neck again and be like the Iraqi War Vet that is paralysed from the neck down, blind, and on a ventilator for the rest of his days. I hope has a Ipod and some kick A$$ headphones. Last I heard he was in the James A Haley VA in Tampa Florida where I used to go. All he can do is lay in bed. Remember my motto yet?

Ric your story is very inspiring. It is very easy for people to forget just how blessed they really are. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Peace,
Tommy

Over the rockie mountains we lost an engine which did damage to the hydraulic system along with sucking all the oil out of the other. Would have made it to the runway if it wasn't for the mountains. I had impact injuries, from the pressure, debre and g-forces that were strong enough to rip organs and other bodyparts. When it actually crashed everything is a big hazy, I just remember it sounding like a gunshot.... not long and drawn out like you hear in the movies, but like a snap. The plane wadded up like a soda can and when it stopped my whole body hurt and I couldn't hear anything but ringing like a bell (I think I lost some hearing from it too) and all the alarms in the cockpit still going off. I crawled out the side of the plane and layed on the ground till help came. It was stupid but I remember thinking about if I would get ticks (like those little bugs that crawl in you), haha, I don't think I was all there . The airplane had equipment that allowed help to find us and some landworkers also saw it and called help.

I really feel for Travis Barker and DJ AM, who were injured and lost friends in a plane crash last week in a similar airplane to what I was in. They both suffered burns but are supposed to live.

I don't want to experience my Dad dying... I know it's got to happen eventually, he's pushing 70 and chances are I'll still be around when he goes, but I'm really not looking forward to it. (then again who is)

I don't want to experience war (first hand). I've had a few friends serve in Afghanistan recently, and half of them are coming back messed up, mentally instead of physically. Movies are good enough for me thanks...

Glad to hear that it worked out for you Matt. I absolutely hate planes. I'm terrified of flying. I can't do it unless I am wacked out on drugs. Funny, I used to want to be a pilot...LOL. You know, if a car breaks down you just get out and walk...if planes ever get to the point where there is a legitimate backup for when they "break" then I might change the way I feel about them. All the stories shared in this thread so far have just reaffirmed my belief in that.

Flying in planes was the reason I learned to skydive when I was 22 :D

LOL. Well that is one way to deal with it...I think I would be much happier if we all had to wear parachutes and had the ability to eject if necessary.

My company makes turbine blades for that engine I believe. Hopefully it wasn't our fault!! :(

Holy crap, scary indeed ===:O

heard that some airlines run simulator practicing on landing MD90's without engine power at all... helps to know when engine power is down...
