$229 Blu-ray Player Best Buy

Yeah, this is a permanent reduction. This one is a profile 1.1 only Funai clone. It's essentially the same as the Emerson and Magnavox units sold at Wal-Mart. It doesn't internally decode DTS-HD MA or multichannel Dolby TrueHD, but it will bitstream the high res audio codecs to a receiver capable of decoding. The upscaling ain't the greatest, either. However, the unit is cheaper than the PS3 (as a non-flagship standalone should be).

Oppo isn't going to be $229 with all of the capabilities it will have AFAIK.

I bought that Insignia player for my dad (got it for $199 at BB) and it is actually a pretty good player so far.

It will be under 400 I think...

I plan to pick one up for sure. The Insignia isn't a bad player at all. Upscaling doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look great.

I will be picking up one of the Oppos for myself for sure.

I was going to create a new thread for this, but I honestly don't know if it deserves it.

Amazon has the Sony BDP-S300 for $200 with free shipping. I haven't followed Blu-ray, so I don't know it that's a deal or not. It's only while supplies last.

Thanks Adam. I'm pondering the thought of buying this for my brother. He's using a DLP and my old HTIB. I think the load time might drive him bonkers, unless current FW has made it speedier.

Anyone have insight to share on this player? Where's allargon anyways? :p

I do work... Granted, I type on Audioholics forums, too.

Give me the Insignia over that slow BDP-S300 any day.

Let's see...

The BDP-S300 doesn't bitstream high res audio, doesn't decode DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD, doesn't do profile 1.1 or 2.0 (now becoming a reality thanks to Paramount). It does have multichannel anlog outs for those remaining PCM, DD (Thanks, Warner!), DD+, DTS and DTS-HR HR discs. The upscaling reportedly isn't that great, either. The BDP-S300 is really a 1st generation BDP-S1 dumbed down. In fairness the BDP-S300 was one of the first low cost (sub $500) Blu-Ray standalones. However, it's time has come and gone. This thing along with every other profile 1.0 player should be no more than $100.

Did I mention that I really dislike the BDP-S300?

Thanks! I appreciate it. And btw, I didn't type that question to imply that you are always glued to AH, but rather as a wishful request to have my query answered by someone who knows about these things. :) I in fact almost PMd you, but in any case my wish was fulfilled.
