First Plasma Purchase

Hi all,
I am about to purchase my first plasma tv. I have settled on the 50 inch Panasonic PZ85U. If anyone has positive or negative comments on that tv I would like to hear them.

For my sound system I am going with the Panasonic SC-PT960. If I buy the tv and that system I get a discounted price.

For those in Chicago, I am thinking about buying from ABT and having them do the install. $400 for the basic install and an extra $250 to put a outlet for the power cord behind the tv. Has anyone used ABT for this type of instalation? Any positive or negative comments would be very much appreciated. Thank You!

You'll read mostly positives about any of the Panasonic displays. I'm on my second one now.

The only bad things I can say about the Panny plasmas is that they are usually slightly inferior to the much more expensive Pioneers and Vidikrons? in terms of PQ and don't do 1080p24 cadences. CNet said the Pioneer you mentioned didn't do the best in terms of noise reduction. It can't be worse at SD scaling than my Mitsubishi DLP. Everything SD on the Mits looks like silly putty. My buddy has a previous year Panny. He's very pleased.

This is Audioholics. Are you seriously talking about getting a receiverless DVD-based HTtiB with tiny satellite speakers?

I don't know about ABT, but $650 sounds kind of high. $400 for the total thing would be tolerable. Of course, they are probably charging $200 for the stand, so $450 for labor and electrical isn't super outrageous. A good handyman would likely be cheaper, but there is some comfort with paying for peace of mind.

Hey, Chris. Welcome to Audioholics. I live in Wheaton. I have bought some things from ABT but never had reason to use their installation services. Theoutlet price you quoted is not out of the park for the Chicago metro area. I'm a tradesman myself, and to have an electrician insatll that outlet would be that much or more......hopefully there won't be any drywall repair.
I have the previous year's Panny Plasma (42") and love it. The PQ is just fine on all fronts in my humble opinion. The menus are very easy to work.........I don't think you will be disappointed.
I kind of agree with the above poster........do some research here on audioholics and read up on your options for Home Theatre Surround sound. Are you on a strict budget? While that Panasonic home theatre in a box (htib) may seem like the easiest way to go, which it probably is, I would def think about buying a receiver and some decent speakers. They have the Yamaha RXV363BK for under $200, and that is a fine fine machine that is better than the whole htib you are considering. Frankly, the idea behind the whole home theatre in a box is that you can set it up yourself, at home pretty easily. If you can hook up a computer, you can hook up the htib. For $450 install, that seems like a waste to me. If you are going to have professional installers out, a home theatre in a box is kind of, um, silly. Do your homework. Tell your sales guy you want a real receiver. Give him a budget and see what he can do. You are spending a lot of cash. Get it right and you will be amazed at what movies look and sound like on your new rig.
So, in closing. The Panny Plasma is great. The outlet is cool, too. The HTIB is kind of lame, but would work if you are dead set on it. If you are open to going a bit further down the rabbit hole, you could enhance this experience by leaps and bounds compared to the htib and make those installers work for that $450. David

Chris, two things... #1) My apologies if my previous message came off as harsh. Definitely welcome to Audioholics. Re-reading it..the tone may have come off incorrectly. We definitely want you to get the best for your budget. Generally most of us tend to steer people away from HTtiB solutions as the sound quality usually lacks compared to separate solutions that can be put together for similar money. #2) I said $200 for the stand in my post when I meant to type mounting bracket.

Hey, no worries. I have been on enough other forums to not take things too personally. You were fine. I appreciate any help I can get (thanks to David too). I agree about the sound system, it is not the greatest solution, but this is not really a "home theatre" in the traditional sense. This is going into my family room, which is relatively small and is an open two story room. I was trying to keep costs down and that is why I was looking at htib. I also wanted "wireless" speakers for the rear. I will go back and look at some recievers and speakers. Thanks a lot for the advice!

Oh and the install price was $400 to deliver, mount on the wall, hide the cables and hook up to my components. $250 to add a power outlet behind the tv. The bracket was another $150. Last night I was figuring out where I would mount it on the wall, it would be pretty low based on line of sight from couch, so now I am considering just puting it on a stand and taking the extra cash and getting a better sound system and a DVD player.....it never ends...lol...

Chris, you can do SO much better for the sound system. For not much more, you can get a set up that utterly humiliates that pitiful (and any) HTIB sound system. Start a thread in the speaker forum or PM me - whatever - do not get that HTIB set up - it's a waste.
