I listened to the album at work this morning, but couldn't really listen like I want to, but so far I like it. I still wish they rocked out hard like they used to on their first few albums.

The best Metallica is by far Master of Puppets IMO. Second is And Justice for all. Cliff Burton was the best bassist they had.

I also think that as they get older it's harder to thrash like a they did in their youth...

First thing I noticed is that most of the songs are really long, 7 or 8 minutes long. I haven't had time to really listen through the whole disc, but I think Suicide and Redemption will make an awesome driving song. So far, I would say there's some good and some not so good, YMMV of course. I suspect I'll just pick out a few songs for regular listening, those being Suicide and Redemption, The Judas Kiss, The End of the Line, The Day that Never Comes and Cyanide.

Ok, I had a chance to listen to the album on my system. This thing is so compressed its unbelievable. There is literally zero dynamic range. The vocals are driven into distortion territory in day that never comes. There is hardly any spatial perception but what's there is odd: the vocals are in the floor and the drums are in the ceiling! Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that studio. This is only going to sound good in my car, I'm afraid.

The songwriting is not bad in my opinion, but the studio engineering is TERRIBLE.

I actually originally owned the LP (no longer), but have now acquired the CD. Me too as far as the first Metallica recording owned. They were so raw and fast on that one!

the 2LP and 5LP sets are not much better than the CD. no clipping, but the dynamic range has been smashed well before

have you heard the Guitar Hero version? here's a comparison

Ok I finally listened to this on my system and I could not have been MORE dissapointed in the sound. This is a perfect example of a mastering engineer KILLING the original dynamic mixes. This is the worst peice O crap that Mettallica has put out to date(not songs -sound) I just don't like anything Rick Rubin has done since ( BLood Sugar Sex Magic) That was a great sounding record...This new record from Mettallica is one of the worst sounding releases that I have had the displeasure of hearing....Sad really... There are no dynamics.....NONE..

there's loads of dynamics in the G3 rip, which you can find in unconventional locations

If you like the music, it seems that the only practical thing to do is to seek out the Guitar Hero 3 rip on file-sharing networks.

Unfortunately, the only legal way to buy the album in high quality format is to buy Guitar Hero 3. If you own the GH3 game, then you can legally possess the tracks from Guitar Hero 3, but not if you own the Metallica CD, however. The specific mix/versions are considered independent, so far as I know. This means that owning the Metallica CD, which has very different mix/version of the songs, will not give you a right to possess the tracks from Guitar Hero 3.

Of course, the above assumes you are technically interested in being legal. I think that, sort of, anyone that has bought the CD has a right on ethical grounds to download the Guitar Hero 3 tracks from the standpoint of deserving a usable product(the CD is not usable on any real hi-fi system) for your money. But then again, Guitar Hero's producers worked to make the mix from Guitar Hero 3, so you would not be compensating them for their work if you did not buy the Guitar Hero 3 game. The only way to satisfy every point is to buy the game.

You know what? It's absolutely ridiculous that this situation exists and has to be considered!

BTW, I just bought the Mobile Fidelity mastered Kill 'Em All on LP. The sound quality is incredible - very realistic sounding. Very enjoyable.
